Empty freezers. Cleaned out shelves. Aisles totally empty, as if it were a going out of business sale. The chicken thighs, the frozen broccoli, the toilet paper are all feared missing.
Its slim pickings these days at supermarkets and convenience stores across the region as people are jamming into aisles to stock up on food, household goods, and cleaning supplies amid rising concerns theyll be forced to self-quarantine for an extended period of time. As cases of the coronavirus continue to spread, industry experts promise that the virus wont lead to a break in the food supply chain -- but it was clear in busy groceries Friday that many shoppers would rather be safe than sorry.
Is this it? The end? Donna Knowles asked without irony as she became the 26th person in a line that stretched from the cashier deep into the bakery section at the Market Basket in Gloucester early Friday afternoon.
"I just came in to grab a few things, hoping to make a few dinners before I go to work,'' she said, sizing up the line. "I dont think thats going to happen.''
"The only way youre getting any water is if you go down to the ocean and boil it,'' Mike Francis called out to another customer in a different corner of the store as he stocked chips in the snack aisle.
"Its worse than a blizzard, its worse than pre-Thanksgiving,'' Francis, a distributor for Utz snacks, told a reporter. "Ive never seen anything like this. And its like this in every store.

Prepping for this is like prepping for Y2K. If it makes one feel better, great.
When there is no TP, they will clear out the kleenex shelves.
Just sorry to see some of the comments from people who identify as preppers on FR.
On one of the main COVID-19 threads, there is a growing attitude of "we put up with criticism for prepping - so to those who have not prepped, figure it out."
COVID-19 has resulted in ugliness from many.
These are the most consistently upbeat posts I have seen in several days, with minor exceptions.
CONGRATUALTIONS, POSTERS, YOU ARE A REMARKABLE BUNCH.
Especially the one who likes animals more than people!!
Warm regards to all.
> Who the heck is hoarding milk?
It’s all the people making their own cottage cheese.
Don’t tell rktman (poSt #2)
Mine was totally stocked this morning including toilet paper. The toilet paper mania will run its course in a week. All the hoarders will get what they need by then and people will see supply is available and calm down.
They’ve already started clearing out the Kleenex.
I had just stocked up and frozen foods, and lo and behold, my freezer decided to die.
Luckily I was able to pick up the last Garage-Ready Freezer they had in stock. Those are going fast, too!
Ha, mine just died also, 10 years old.
Yep, I am back to doing Intermittent Fasting. One, it conserves food stocks, and two, it's good for the immune system.
I hope the Metamucil didnt all sell out.
Hubby went to the base Fri and picked up our Meds, we see the Vet Monday for Shots for 1 and will pick up Flea/Heartworm meds..for 2.
Our Kroger’s was kinda picked over by 8:15 am. Picked up 3 lbs Angus Chuck, Drooled over the large steaks we Can’t afford at $16 lb. Settled for a frozen Pizza. Restocked the basic staples got a gallon of milk, whereas I usually get 1/2, that is what they were out of. Got extra eggs, so I could hard boil the batch I had. TP was gone Except the Expensive stuff and not much left. Have 7-8 big pks at the house.
Isles of Soup, Canned veggies, fruits, nuts, dried fruits chips, were Full. The Fresh produce was full, even the booze was still on shelf. Some seniors had Hit the Baking Isle. Basic stuff..skipped over the cake, cookie, and pudding/jello stuff.
Idiots grumbling about Bacterial hand soap. Last Time Kroger’s ran a 99 cent sale on Dish Soap I got 20. Just reload into the hand ones. Butt Wipes at house were Dried Out, Opened lid, added H-2-0. Fixed that. Shelves in garage hold enough laundry stuff for a year, another 99 cent buy.
I’d got water the week before when it was on sale for drinking..
Been googling the DYI for hand sanitizer, Rehydration solutions. My baking skills are rusty, had to dig out my mom’s who were her mom’s recipes for biscuits/cornbread..Forgot to see if they had Lard, as that is what Grandma used for biscuit making. We have a a air fryer so use canned sprays more.
In other words I’ve 90 days for 2 and 2 dogs of food. Have to see what the Navy base pharmacy turns up with as meds come due..Every time they are short no telling what they sub in. BIG item is ENDO has to change out that crap Metformin. It Hates me. Januvia broke me out in bad case of Hives and Predisone runs BS up.
Someone needs to combine and mobilize all our daily deliveries like UPS, USPS, Amazon, and Drone drops for Meds. Trash those useless test guns.. Look at developing a small wipe like I use for finger Pricking that can be cheap, made fast, change color if it is Positive, Have bins full to hand out for self testing. In a bag that has simple picture instructions and disposal info. eliminate middle person using a test gun. Same with Flu, sure as heck don’t feel like a 2 hr round trip to a doctor’s office just to be checked for Flu. Florida is letting Pharmacist as of July 1 to run Flu test. Do it nationwide.
Fire CDC Director Redfield, he lied on his Dengue Fever and Ebola papers, botched and lied about the Fake Opioid crisis which has disappeared off radar after great damage was done to innocent people who live in level 10 pain 24-7-365 for decades on the same dose of Pain meds. He’s a chris chisti bot. No friend of Trump’s..Take his whole crew with him. Hire the Best Epidemiologist in his place..He hates Trump.
I guess the virus has eaten all the city water pipes.
At a larger grocery (eg Walmart Super Center), there may be extra inventory in the tp backroom, due to mnf specials, or shelf space/top shelf indicated on scanner.
I bought some at CVS.
I saw a guy walking out of Sam’s yesterday 8 AM with nothing in his cart but TP and an enormous bottle of rum. He’s ready!
“What responsibility do people who believe the media have in this?”
None. They’re not smart enough to know what morons they are and we have more than our share right here on FR.
Pat, pat, pat. Atta boy! :)
kroger.com still has some kcups, ship to home.
Can’t deliver the cheeses, sorry.
