For those who are not aware, Royal Dutch Shell pretty much invented scenario planning for thinking about the future. Usually you look at a utopian scenario, a dystopian scenario and a couple of others in between.

But unlike coal, oil and gas companies are still definitely profitable, even investable, and more oil and gas are being produced, and used, every year — which helps explain why carbon emissions keep rising too. There’s little doubt that fossil-fuels are, culturally speaking, on the wrong side of history. But there is still a lot more money to extract from those wells, and the fossil-fuel businesses are intent on extracting as much as they can.

It's not about the profit from selling oil and gas.

The world economy runs on this.

If it is gone, the world economy crashes and many more die from that than a few degrees warming.

This is what is actually the inconvenient truth.

Find a way to totally replace oil and gas with something that won't crash the economy, is reasonably priced, and you will have not only become a hero, but built a better mouse trap for riches beyond imagination.

We will need fossil fuels and a lot of it to get all of mankind off the Earth to a more inhabitable planet. As the Earth turns into a sauna and all plants have become a thing of the past, man will have no time left to leave. We have less than 10 years to get the rocket ships ready and seats assigned. By then the rising ocean waters will be approaching the mountain tops of Mt Rainer and Mt Denali. Mush of mankind will have drowned and died from starvation. Fire and brimstone will be coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria! If I’m wrong, then nothing happens! We’ll all go to jail; peacefully, quietly.
