Massachusetts second suspected case of coronavirus was identified in a woman in her 20s in Norfolk County who recently returned from Italy with a school group, state health officials said Monday night.
It was the first case to test positive since testing started Friday at the State Public Health Laboratory.
The woman is recovering at home, officials said.
The individuals test results came back positive just this evening, a Department of Public Health statement said Monday night. Specimens will be sent to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and, if confirmed, this would be the second confirmed positive COVID-19 case in Massachusetts since the outbreak started in the US in January.
Confirmed coronavirus cases among students and staff back from trips to Italy forced a Rhode Island school to close for the week, while schools in Newton and Bellingham and in New Hampshire sent potentially exposed kids and teachers home on Monday.
In Rhode Island, a teenage girl who recently returned from Italy tested positive for the coronavirus, along with two adults from the trip, prompting Saint Raphael Academy in Pawtucket to close until March 9.
All 38 of the people on the trip are being told to stay at home for 14 days and self-monitor for coronavirus symptoms.
At Newton North High School, more than 20 students and staff members who returned from Italy will stay home from school until further notice, officials said on Monday.

not a word about the nature of the school trip, the group involved, or what they did and saw while abroad
journalism standards are abysmal these days
Remember when students stayed home for their education?
Li'l Miss might want to re-evaluate her travel plans.
and what were the dates involved ???
When did they arrive in Italy when did they leave ???
“recent” is not good reporting...
Where’s the “when” ???
My son and his girlfriend returned from Italy late on 2/27. When they got back to USA they soon became very sick - throwing up, high temperatures, etc. On 2/28 they stayed home, had no access to anyone and still very sick. On 2/29 they called the local hospital who told them to remain in isolation and call back on Sunday if they were still sick. On 3/1 they went into a private entrance of the local hospital and were met by medical team in masks and gloves to have samples taken. The samples were sent to CDC infectious disease center for testing. On late evening of 3/2 they were contacted by CDC that they had tested negative for Coronavirus.
The bottom line - they were in an infected area, became very sick, but did not have Corona. Posting for general information since we have first hand experience.
We used to live in the town where the young woman is quarantined. My son and his family live there now. She lives in a heavily populated townhouse complex. The school authorities say she’s had no contact with anyone at any of the schools.
