Coronavirus: Outbreak spreads in Europe from Italy
BBC ^ | 02 26 2020 | Staff

Several European countries have announced their first coronavirus cases, all apparently linked to the growing outbreak in Italy.

Austria, Croatia, Greece and Switzerland said the cases involved people who had been to Italy, as did Algeria in Africa.

The first positive virus test has been recorded in Latin America - a Brazilian resident just returned from Italy.

Italy has in recent days become Europe's worst-affected country.

Authorities have confirmed more than 300 cases and 12 deaths there, the most recent a 70-year-old resident of Lombardy who died after being taken to intensive care in Parma. The country has also seen four children infected.

Now run the number with the people who have finished the full course of the disease, the recovered plus the dead. Not just dividing the dead by everyone who is still sick and assuming the sick are all going to be survivors.

Yes, the textbook formula for a historical disease mortality is dead over infected, but I assure you everyone who had the Spanish Flu in 1918 has finished the entire course of the disease!

Africa and South America likely already have the virus. They don’t have test kits. So don’t think that they are free of the virus. They are just free of modern health care. You will see them get the virus and have a million cases in a very short time. The virus is coming. Its even coming here. You can’t stop it. But if you can slow it down, you can manage it. Right now the Chinese are overwhelmed. Doctors and nurses are sick. They have few masks and little oxygen. So if you get it in China, you just have to take your chances. Plus the pollution and heavy smoking makes it more fatal than it would be in Europe or America.

If you slow it down you get two very large benefits. One, your health care system is more likely to be able to handle the strain of a small epidemic potentially saving the lives of many with severe cases. Secondly, it takes two years to produce a flu shot for this virus. One year to figure out the virus and test it. And one year to grow it enough to produce the numbers of flu shots capable of handling the well population.

Hot and humid didn't stop the spread in Singapore.

I don't think we can depend on heat and humidity to kill something that lives quite well in a mostly water human body at 98.6°F, and even when that body runs a high fever...

And...

*Less than 3,000 have died from coronavirus worldwide

*The Flu has killed nearly 25,000 Americans in the past 4 months

Eagerly waiting for the Groupies to arrive to spin these numbers!

"Now run the number with the people who have finished the full course of the disease, the recovered plus the dead. Not just dividing the dead by everyone who is still sick and assuming the sick are all going to be survivors." Maybe I am reading the data wrong not sure, somebody chime in:

Does BNO column list the total number of infected under Cases, and does not drop them off that list once they are recovered, dies or run the full course?

They have the number of recovered under notes.

Link to BNO opens in new tab

BNO lists the recovered in the 'Totals' row for China, and line by line in the 'Notes' column for the rest of the world.

I use the JHU CSSE data.

It's only as accurate as the data provided by the assorted countries. Take the Chinese data with a herd-sized block of salt. Front-line agencies have been advised by Xi Jinping that reports of new cases will NOT be tolerated...

“Less than 3,000 have died from coronavirus worldwide”

You don’t really believe Chinese government propaganda regarding their death toll, do you?

For now this is my basic list (which applies to any cold and flu season):

Wash your hands.

Use hand sanitizer.

Avoid crowds.

Avoid sick people.

Be aware of what's going on in your community.

Stay informed but don't panic.

If anything changes I'll update my list.

Not just welded in. All utilities cut too. No electricity, no water, etc.

Brutal.

Wonder if the new tenants will mind the body sized stains on the carpet...
