A controversial bill that would have banned Virginians from selling so-called assault weapons and owning high-capacity magazines was defeated by lawmakers after a handful of Democrats rejected the proposal.
State senators in the Judiciary Committee voted to shelve the bill (House Bill 961) until next year and asked the state crime commission to study the issue. Four Democratic senatorsCreigh Deeds, John Edwards, Chap Petersen, and Scott Surovellbroke with their party and joined Republicans to reject the measure in a 105 vote.
The Feb. 17 bipartisan vote sparked cheers in the committee room, which was packed with gun advocates, according to The Associated Press.
Gun rights groups and Second Amendment advocates told The Epoch Times they were encouraged by the recent outcome but warned the measure could still be brought up again by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, who had made the weapons ban and other gun control measures one of his top priorities.
The legislation, dubbed HB 961, expands the definition of assault firearm and prohibits any person from importing, selling, transferring, manufacturing, purchasing, or transporting an assault firearm. It defines an assault firearm as a semi-automatic center-fire rifle that expels single or multiple projectiles by the action of an explosion of combustible material with a fixed magazine capacity in excess of 12 rounds, among other things.
The original bill would have banned the ownership of all assault weapons, but an amendment would change it to only ban sales and transfers of assault firearms. The bill made clear that any Virginian who already o

Congrats to the VA folks here for the victory today.
“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”
Hunters make the difference.
I think the election in just a little over a year made a bigger difference.
I hope the Virginians really punish the Democrats over this.
Good. This bill was racist.
It specifically forbade illegal aliens from having guns.
That would have deprived many illegals of their livelihood.
Have not heard much about her but if PDJT is endorsing her, maybe she will help turn that blue state around.
Nothing stops them from bringing it up again if there is another mass shooting.
Congratulations, Virginia. Throw them out.
VA elections are in the year after the Presidential, 2021 is the next one.
All these dems still need to be thrown out on the street.
Perhaps this might change hearts and motivate the complacent to actually show up to the polls in Virginia. They need to flip half the approximate 5% margin. It is even closer in Nevada and Minnesota, both under a 2% margin to bring them into the GOP column.

Another gun grabbing dummy wrote this. In a modern cartridge, the explosive chemical in the primer ignites the propellant. (gunpowder) The propellant then burns rapidly creating expanding gases under high pressure which launches the bullet from the cartridge case, past the chamber leade, and begins to engage the rifling of the gun’s barrel. The burning gun powder launches the bullet. An explosion would probably wreck the barrel.
Had this idiot bit of tyrannical law passed, an argument to invalidate the law might be that bullets are not expelled by an explosion, so the law does not apply to my AR-15. They would say that the primer’s explosion starts the whole shebang. I say why not mess with them in court? It’s moot for now, but they will be back unless the DEMONRATS are expelled from government.
Deeds is a former Democrat nominee for governor.
and if Lil Mike spends a billion and looses this year then hopefully he'll keep his cash out of the Commonwealth in 2021.
I think the one in 2001 is for the governor and the state senate elections aren’t until 2003. However, some of the Democrats are from somewhat rural districts.
I hope the Virginians really punish the Democrats over this.
The elections of Virginia legislators happen in odd years.
