Washington President Donald Trump appeared to suggest in a television interview Wednesday that hes willing to consider entitlement cuts in the future, a move that would mark a tectonic shift from his stance during his 2016 run for the White House.
Trump suggested he was open to a cut in social safety net benefits, such as Medicare and Social Security, in comments during a CNBC interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
While Trump has repeatedly talked up strong economic growth, the federal budget deficit has swollen as his administration has pressed for tax cuts and increased government spending.
Asked if entitlement cuts would ever be on his agenda, Trump responded, At some point they will be.
As a candidate for the White House, Trump stood apart from much of the GOP primary field as he vowed to oppose cuts to Social Security and Medicare, while also ensuring every American had health coverage.
In the CNBC interview, Trump called tackling entitlement spending the easiest of all things and suggested higher economic growth would make it easier to reduce spending on the programs.
Well, were going were going to look, Trump said. We also have assets that weve never had. I mean weve never had growth like this.

“LOL! How much can the taxpayers pay?
Do you also ask that about foreign aid? And our nation-building wars? Or just when it comes to spending money on American citizens?
Reverse the question and address it to yourself.
Can we afford any of it?
Money doesn’t grow on trees
It grows from an increase of wealth. Have our SS contributions been used to increase wealth?
If so, we have plenty profit from SS payments to pay good benefits.
“Can we afford any of it?”
Do you believe we can afford foreign aid? And nation-building in Iraq and Afghanistan (where we fund health care, education, and infrastructure)? If you do believe these expenditures for foreignors are “affordable,” why do you object to spending money on Americans at home?
You can find a difference in our conclusions, but not our views LOL!
Fun stuff!
It’s more accurate to say ALL foreign aid is spent on America than what you posit!
If you like SF, Keith Lsumer has some good ‘Retief’ stories on this subject.
“Its more accurate to say ALL foreign aid is spent on America than what you posit!”
What? “All foreign aid is spent on America”? What does that mean?
Whatever it means, it sounds like you’re for foreign aid, including US federal spending on people’s health care, old age benefits, education and social needs - but only if they’re foreigners, living in countries halfway around the world. ??
“sounds like”... LOL!
So silly.
Anyway ‘foreign aid’ is spent on US companies. As any fool knows.
Often not well though.
Hoping this is BS. I was forced to put into it and I plan to receive it.
If illegal aliens are getting free care, then seniors who worked their entire lives get their Medicare.
Thank you.
I think those are important to all Americans over 60. They are to me, esp when I read about all the free healthcare for illegals.
Exactly. And we voted for America First.
Anyway foreign aid is spent on US companies
So you’re for foreign aid. You’re just not for Social Security for Americans. Got it, thanks.
“You won!” LOL!
“You won!” LOL!
Yep. By the way, Social Security is also spent on US companies.
Whatever...
“If Social Security and Medicare are the important things to you, ...Find some leftist boomer site”
If that’s your message to America - “If you think Social Security is important, vote Democrat” - get ready for a the GOP to lose big in November.
I don’t want the Dems to win. So I hope Trump doesn’t take your advice.
You are going off the deep end over this AND you did NOT hear Trump say this, you are taking what the AP says he said in an interview, YOU should know better!!! Until I HEAR Trump say it, it is NOT TRUE plain and simple!!! Trump doesnt LIE but the media will do ANYTHING to divide him from his base and you are falling right into their trap!!!
I paid no attention to it whatsoever and TBH wasn’t even aware that he had a position. I’m as old as a man can be while still being in the 100% guaranteed screwed group on both programs. If both disappeared tomorrow it would be a massive net benefit for me and everyone younger.
I’m also a conservative and a Republican.
From this perspective, someone losing their shit over the suggestion of a change to FDR’s ponzi scheme or the insanely-abused Medicare is amazingly self-interested. And since you care only for yourself, there’s really no reason why anyone else should care about you. By your own presentation, you’re not in the boat with the rest of us, you’re happy to let us all sink if you can claim a life preserver for yourself.
This whole thread and the attitude you have expressed herein would strain to be more off-putting.
