FWIW - My grandfather was friends with Hiram Bingham III and served as anthropologist and medical doctor for his 1915 expedition to Machu Picchu. We have most of the photographs he took including a carefully done panorama looking down on the Urubamba River as it flows around the base of the mountain Machu Picchu.

FR’s connection to history blows my mind sometimes.

When I was in graduate school, I was in the department office for some reason when an elderly gentleman came in briefly. After he left, one of the staff told me that he was a member of the Bingham family of Machu Picchu fame.

Wow! I am impressed... a true moment in history {for us history nuts.} I look at those pics of the first discovery and it is just stunning at how well the restoration has gone. No disrespect to Howard Carter but I think Bingham made the great discovery... you just can't ship Machu Picchu to museums around the world.

About 1999 I was scheduling a tour trip to Cuzco and Machu Picchu. That terror group - Shining Path? - seized an embassy and the tour was canceled. A life's dream squashed! [:^( Now I understand that the govt limits the time a tourist can spend on the site, so many coming to see the wonders. Is one going to travel all the way to Peru to spend an hour or so on the site?

I have also been fascinated by the search for Paititi.
