Agnes Callamard, the U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial killing, said on Thursday night that the U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian terrorist mastermind Gen. Qasem Soleimani was a violation of international law.
The U.N. has been oddly quiet about Soleimanis violations of international law, including activities that indisputably violated U.N. sanctions.
The targeted killings of Qasem Soleiman and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis are most likely unlawful and violate international human rights law: Outside the context of active hostilities, the use of drones or other means for targeted killing is almost never likely to be legal, Callamard wrote on Twitter.
She proceeded to lay out an impossibly stringent standard for preventive action that becomes grotesquely amusing when measured against Soleimanis malign activities, not least his involvement in an undisputed act of war against the United States, the attack on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad last week:
To be justified under international human rights law, intentionally lethal or potentially lethal force can only be used where strictly necessary to protect against an imminent threat to life.
In other words, whoever targeted these two men would need to demonstrate that the persons targeted constitute(d) an imminent threat to others. An individuals past involvement in terrorist attacks is not sufficient to make his targeting for killing lawful.
Furthermore, drone killing of anyone other than the target (family members or others in the vicinity, for example) would be an arbitrary deprivation of life under human rights law and could result in State responsibility and individual criminal liability.
The use of drones on the territory of other States has also been justified on the basis of self-defense. Under customary international law States can take military action if the threatened attack is imminent, no other means would deflect it, and the action is proportionate.

“Organizing an attack on an embassy has always been considered an act of war. The attackers of our Iraqi embassy clearly stated who their leader was.
Far as Im concerned, thats enough.”
It’s not the first time the Ayatollah’s have attacked an American Embassy in my lifetime. Perhaps though, it will be the last.
You got that backwards, FRiend.
Bite Me
America
The next group of assholes that need to go. US and Israel pull out and watch the dominos fall. Go meet in Brussels.
"The targeted killings of Qasem Soleiman and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis are most 'likely'

You don't get more cut and dried than that.
U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial killing, said on Thursday night that the U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian terrorist mastermind Gen. Qasem Soleimani was a violation of international law.
She chose her words carefully.....”likely” illegal evidences she just doesn’t know.
US to UN “get bent”.
(Past) Time to start eliminating some of these UN political terrorists too.
Trump and Pompao said this was a targeted attack to stop an imminent attack against our Diplomats and military forces....(likely at the embassy)
Further Soleimani was banned by the UN sanctions to not travel outside his country.....
She needs to get her facts straight which she obviously does not have! nor to include in her statement.
The UN can fund right off, the dirty mother funders!
“Let Tehran host the SOBs.”
Ha! Can you imagine all the dictators and their families going to Tehran instead of NYC to do their shopping sprees!
“U.N.: U.S. Broke International Law by Eliminating Soleimani”
I suggest the U.N. hire a disarmament person and start the disarming in Baghdad.
Agnès Callamard is a ‘French Human Rights Activist’ and Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions at the Office of the UN Commissioner ‘for Human Rights’....She formerly served under the Sec. Gen. of ‘Amnesty International’.
Tell Agnes we don’t care what she thinks.
Under her definition it would be illegal to kill Hitler in 1943.
Does anyone give a rats anus what that bunch of scum thinks
I wouldn’t mind test firing a few of our drones at the UN.
Blowing up a mass murderer, rather than handing them billions in ransom $ as obama did is definitely a ‘huge’ improvement in our foreign policy! Hugely!
