The Church played an essential role in giving people of the Eastern soviet block hope, and played an important role in the fall of Communism. Maybe that is why we have what we have now - as a backlash by the socialist/Communist left. I don't know.
The Church needs a modern reformation, and it should be led by the laity. If this Pope excommunicated me, it would mean nothing to me - except maybe something I would be proud of.
