Over 1,000 bullets and 11 guns have been lost or stolen from the Army, the Ministry of Defence has admitted amid fears they could be in the hands of criminals.
The missing munitions, including eight rifles and 1,000 rounds of ammunition taken in one burglary from a Merseyside army cadet facility, all disappeared within twelve months, a Sky News investigation found.
The news comes just weeks after the Telegraph revealed hundreds of unexploded munitions had been found in Scotland over the past three years.
Land mines, grenades and flares have all been recovered, including several in the city centres of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and were described as routine by the Ministry of Defence.
Amongst the ordnance found were several phosphorous flares which burn at extremely high temperatures and can cause life threatening injuries when activated.
Explosive munitions were also among the items reported missing from 26 September 2018 to 30 September 2019, the Sky News investigation found. It is thought that most, if not all, of the weapons and munitions are still missing.
Previously, military weapons have been discovered for sale on the internet.

I’m always finding 1000 rd boxes of ammo I hid years ago and forgot about.
1000 bullets? I’ve shot that on a weekend.
Fair enough.
Could still be something far less for initial range instruction.
As I said early, we need some Brit mil types to comment, not sure if we have any of those.
Amen.
One of the most stupid articles I have ever read.
11 rifles and 1,000 rounds....So what?
A kingdom will fall and its population will be held as slaves or executed with 11 rifles and 1k,000 rounds?
A pimple on an elephant’s ass.
I might imagine that it's "the city centres of Glasgow and Edinburgh" that are routine, having not blown up or burned down...
;^)
That "ain't" much!
Does this paper hire teenagers to write copy?
All good points, just absurdity of times we live in.
Bullet means projectile, to enthusiasts. To the rest of the world, it is synonymous with one round of ammunition. It’s used the way “Coke” is for soda or soft drink.
Cadet training in the UK is at high school level, 14-18.
Context. “In the country of the blind the one eyed man is king!”
A small collection has a lot more effect on a disarmed populace. What did Stalin say? One man with a rifle can control onehundred?
Here Pfft! Target practice on a weekend.
Never disarm.
SA80/L98A1 single shot, or L98A2 semiautomatic, 5.56 NATO round.
Good thing its only bullets and not entire cartridges.

In the hands of criminals? Like law abiding citizens stole them?
