The amount of resources to remove industry to space would be massive. This guy obviously does NOT understand anything about heavy industry.

One summer between years in college I worked in a steel mill. I took the opportunity to learn about every aspect of the operation. It may be possible to put a steel mill on Mars,or even on the Moon. It will never be possible to put one in orbit. Not unless the steel-making process is changed drastically.

No, not so. I used to work in a steel mill. The operation of a blast furnace involves putting iron ore (iron oxide) and coke in the furnace and letting the carbon in the coke combine with the oxygen in the ore, producing the heat to melt the iron. The molten iron is then transferred to (in my time) an open-hearth furnace where air is blown at it to burn our the carbon, or, more recently, oxygen is bubbled through the molten iron to burn out the carbon (basic oxygen process). Smelting does not involve oxygen. It's the oxygen in the iron oxide that does the trick.

This is a shockingly stupid idea. Does he really believe we can send the needed materials (those we cannot mine from asteroids) up to space and then bring manufactured goods down cheaper or with less pollution than simply building on earth? How can someone that poor at logical thinking be the head of so large a company?

Isn’t that what we are doing now. Wait till we get Medicare for all, then watch the carnage.
