I was all set to watch it last night and noticed the reviews and after reading them decided that I will not be watching Season 4. Screw Bezos.

I’m wondering how they are getting so many episodes out of a slim novel.

I am a fan of alternate history books. I’ve read a few Harry Turtledove books about WWII from various perspectives. I’ve also read “the Fatherland”, in which we are in 1963 USA and Germany won the war.

So I thought this would be fun. I got three episodes in and stopped watching. It’s not that it wasn’t good. It was that it was stringing me along. What could have taken 5 or ten minutes of plot development took an episode or more. I just don’t have time for that crap.

I tend to avoid “soap operas” period. If I want a long story, I’ll either watch a movie or read a book.

Then there’s the weird security situation during the American antiques auction. The Crown Prince’s widow, senior flag rank officers and cabinet ministers were on hand. And yet, security consisted of just over a dozen Imperial Japanese Army troops. It was laughably lazy scriptwriting. I’d expect at least a battalion of elite Japanese troops seconded for security duty, with snipers posted on rooftops, providing overwatch, within a mile’s radius of the event.

Then there’s the idea of China prevailing against the Japanese. The Chinese Nationalists survived on an equipment and fuel lifeline provided by Uncle Sam. If the US had been overrun, the Chinese would have been reduced to a bow and arrow army. The Communists spent the entire war mostly hiding from the Japanese, losing perhaps 10% of Nationalist casualties.

We’re supposed to believe if somehow the Chinese communists could have supplied arms to open up another front they would have only dealt with this band of jiving black communists. An Imperial army and navy that had beaten the US back across the Pacific and had successfully landed forces that would have dwarfed Operation Downfall were beaten by a few irregulars with a few automatic rifles? Sure, that’s plausible. The noble “we won’t lynch this Japanese butcher” because we’re above these cowardly white guys” scene made me want to retch.

Should add that there is a Kaepernick moment as well, when one black guy suggests flying the America flag to unify the every resisti g. Then we get the speech from the black commie about how that flag never did anything for black people, and it is unceroniously stuffed into a canvas bag and not mentioned again.

Historically, sure, black people were discrimated against. Yet never more than a tiny percentage went communist. The show not only made the black communists the most effective group, but even took the time to make favorable refences to booka by W.E.B DuBois and Marx himself.

Total woke messaging.

Oh, and I should add that the two main resistance groups were both led by women, and that the only evil woman portrayed was a Nazi who kicked the crap out of a white resistance guy twice her size. If not for the intervention of, yes, another toothpick woman, she'd have killed him

There is a scenario under which a successful Japanese invasion of the lower 48 is possible without a Normandy-scale landing. The US would have to have basically disarmed after the 100,000 dead in WWI, the way so many Western European countries did after the Armistice. Imagine a US military reduced to what it was just after the Civil War, such that Custer’s humiliating defeat at the hands of the Indians was possible just a decade postbellum. It would have held on to the Pacific territories because that’s what most countries do, until they are forced to disgorge them after battlefield defeats. In that scenario, Pearl Harbor wouldn’t have been just a sneak attack, but an outright conquest and occupation, all in one stroke, because the defenders would have been few, under-equipped and untrained, due to budget issues. There would have been no battleship-heavy Pacific Fleet, let alone USN aircraft carriers.

But under no circumstances could a victorious Japanese army in North America been beaten by irregulars on a shoestring, white or black. They followed the time-test pacification methods used by Alexander, going back probably to the time of the pharaohs 7,000 years ago - selectively slaughter enemy civilians, with a focus on the kin and close associates of known rebels, up to the point of submission. Why not slaughter them all? Because empires grow strong with increased manpower. And the ruler’s close associates are often the most dangerous enemies* of them all, meaning that it pays to elevate some of the conquered to high positions so they can offset the threat from his associates. Getting the conquered’s people into the ruling clique also has the benefit of communicating to them that they are now part of an empire that treats all of its subjects more or less equally, with prospects of even better things to come, after a probationary period.

* Alexander’s entire family was slaughtered by his closest generals after he died, so this isn’t some kind of isolated phenomenon.

I watched Scream Blacula Scream recently. It was pretty good. I loved that scene where he takes on the two pimps. William Marshall was great in the title role.
