Being a cop or a pol in Mexico is an entrepreneurial enterprise.

Not all cops but my guess is a large majority.

No rule of law. It's always been bad there but with dope and the huge amounts of money...

Places I went as a kid I wouldn't get close to these days.

But with as much blame as Mexico deserves if it wasn't for the demand side in the US for dope the problem wouldn't exist. I'm not sure the cartel killings in Mexico are worse than a busy weekend in Chicago. If not it's only because the thugs in Chicago are bad shots.

The war on drugs is a miserable failure. Not that I have any ideas other than a full out war. And we haven't done that in any war since WWII.

[The war on drugs is a miserable failure.]

There is not and has never been a war on drugs stateside. Wars imply emergency measures. And mass death. The day we execute drug dealers and impose mandatory detox on addicts, with prison terms for relapses, is the day a war on drugs begins. Mexico’s problem is that it doesn’t even have a death penalty for murder. Indonesia’s probably more corrupt than Mexico, but the universal application of the death penalty for just about every criminal homicide means a murder rate 1/10 of the US.
