According to Der kleine Pauly, the ancient city of Tripolis in Lebanon is about 65 km north of Beirut, known as al-Mina today. The Phoenician name "Tarpol" meaning "new land" was changed to "Three City" by folk etymology. It was a gathering place for the Phoenician fleet, and here an uprising against King Artaxerxes III was decided in 351 B.C. After the Battle of Issus, 4,000 Greeks in Darius' army fled through Tripolis to Cyprus and Egypt. After that the city lost its importance but regained it in the Middle Ages.
