A Texas woman was shot dead by a Fort Worth police officer in her home after she heard noises outside, picked up a handgun and pointed it at a window, the officer's arrest warrant showed on Tuesday.
Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew around 2:30 am on Saturday when she heard sounds in her backyard, according to the warrant for former Fort Worth Police Officer Aaron Dean's arrest for alleged murder.
The noises were Dean, 34, and his partner moving around the back of her home, without announcing their presence, after they were sent to investigate why her front door was open.

He was trespassing. He is morally guilty of everything that came of that. See felony murder statutes.
It does, actually. See my link a few posts up.
She was completely in the right and legal side of conduct. The officer was committing several crimes, despite his badge.
If you are sneaking around my house in the dark unannounced I will point mine back at you, and it will be a good shoot.
If the victim's account is accurate, then the victim's gun should be visible in the cop's body cam recording.
I did not see a gun in the video. At what point (time) in the video is her gun visible?
It was not murder. He was on duty and it was a bad police work for sure, I say an accident and they family has one hell of a civil suite. BUT IT WAS NOT MURDER. Manslaughter at best.
There’s a suggestive blur before he shoots, but in the abbreviated video it’s visible at 0:19 on the floor and highlighted at 0:21 next to her body. Looks like a modern autoloader with a flashlight. FWPD has put out full, unedited takes of the videos so it’s pretty clear it’s not a drop/plant gun either.
Manslaughter under color of law is murder in Texas, I believe - automatic upgrade as the peace officer is expected to know better. Texas also does not differentiate voluntary from involuntary manslaughter.
On duty doesn’t matter one damned bit.
I know that you believe that being on duty means being allowed to shoot whomever you please central_va, but it doesn’t work that way in Texas.
The officer in question had an obligation to call inside the house when he arrived. Did he do that?
If you admit that he did not do that, then you are also admitting that he was not following police procedures.
If he was not performing police procedures then the shooting did not happen “in the performance of his duties” and so no carte blache to blast away with his Jammie.
Both the 2 cops and the victim may have had legitimate reason to be fearful, especially if the neighborhood was bad. Most likely a tragic accident. The victim didn’t deserve to die, but neither did the cop intend to murder. Arguable charge of manslaughter, but even that could be based largely on hindsight.
Nothing depends on the kids statement.
I’m not absolving the cop who killed her. He was clearly in the wrong.
I’m just wondering who else is at fault besides the cop who shot her. Is it a problem with the way the called was dispatched to the officers out on patrol? He had only been on the force for a year and half. He must have been partnered with a more experienced officer. If the experienced cop knew that the door had been open for 4 hours, he should have realized that they probably weren’t walking into a crime in progress. They should have had a plan before leaving their car. Did the other cop ring the bell, knock on the door & she didn’t hear it over the sound of the video game she was playing? Or did he fail to use proper procedure also?
“Why was this information withheld while the public was informed of just the kill?”
White cop, dead person of color. There is a script to follow.
They must shape the public’s opinion like always.
I watched the video. Cop is sneaking around the house, in the dark, quiet, with a flashlight, not announcing himself. She’s IN her house. What would you do or think? I’d be pointing the gun at whoever it was too.
This video should be used by cops on how NOT to operate. It’s unbelievable. I play tennis with guys here in Texas and nobody can believe how stupid that cop was. Sneaking around like that at night. She had no idea who it was out there. And that’s his fault.
That woman was a good lady. Taking care of her nephew, her mom, and trying to get into medical school. And I actually feel bad for the cop too. His life is ruined all because of his own mistakes. Monumental tragedy. So so sad....
I can see myself in the same situatioin--in my office at gun bench cleaning gun, I hear noise or see movement in backyard. I pick up gun to look. Trigger happy cop sees me with gun, shoots. My fault I didn't answer the door? Maybe he was following someone from neighborhood into my yard, whatever. Fact is he was in my yard, saw me with gun, shot me. That is close to what occured to this poor woman. It is wrong and indefensible and should scare and outrage all gun owners. The cop should be tried, convicted, AND executed as example to all cops to respect private gun owners, to respect civilians, to protect and serve, not spot and kill.
Oh yeah, I really believe that.
Calm down. It was bad, terrible police work, and a totally avoidable accident. Her family has an air tight civil case against the city. But it was not murder IMO.
That saying is true, but the problem is, hes then committed another crime (if not more).
You have stated it outright. I am absolutely taking you at your word.
That depends on what type (flavor) Your Bagel was and if any Spreads or Toppings were compromised in the event.
