Boris Johnson has personally lobbied Donald Trump to scrap tariffs on single malt whisky that threaten thousands of Scottish jobs after facing demands to intervene.
The Prime Minister used a phone call to the US President on Wednesday evening to express his "disappointment" at the decision to impose tariffs on a series of UK exports next week, including Scotch.

Hilarious book about a tramp steamer and derelict crew entrusted with a hold of Vat 69.
Reminds me of "Band of Brothers",
and, of course:
"No. My name's Penny. Penny Priddy. There, I said it. But it doesn't matter, it's not important. I just, I just sponged up a little too much Vat 69, that's all. I'm down to my last nickel in this lousy town. And they wouldn't even take my luggage in hock. And I lost my room at the Y this morning. But it's cool."
The last time I drank Scotch was 2:30 PM, July 4, 1967.
I do a fair amount of international travel in my job. I can tell you from personal experience that the American whiskey’s in places such as Cape Town, Jakarta, and Istanbul for example are much more expensive and as such you can usually find them untouched at international bars and thus full of good American spirits.
The first distillery to begin distilling French whisky over a quarter century ago is Warenghem in Brittany.
Armorik is the pioneer and leader in the production of French Single Malts.
Born on Celtic ground in Brittany, the original Oui dram is also the most awarded French Single Malt in the US.
Cheaper scotch?
Have you been paying any attention? What, exactly, would you propose that Johnson do, to bring about Brexit, that he’s not already doing?
Yes, since last year.
“”””VAT 69 is an excellent scotch.””””
LOL. Excellent for windshield fluid. In Russia VAT 69 is roughly $11 per bottle. There is better stuff for this price too.
winter is coming. Irish Coffee is mandatory survival equipment. Cream optional.
Bourbon is far superior to whiskey.
OK, please explain better please.
American whiskey and Scotch are quite distinct. So is French whiskey closer to American whiskey or real Scotch? I prefer Scotch, myself, single malt and as peaty as possible.
Scots nationalists don’t care about what the Union does for Scotland. They are so deluded that they think that because much of Scotland’s whisky is exported via Liverpool, that the tax revenue is counted as ‘English’, they also imagine that the Scottish shipbuilding industry would carry on getting Royal Navy shipbuilding contracts when the Italians or the South Koreans could do it much more cheaply if we were going to give the contracts to foreigners, which is what the Scots would be if they became independent. There is no getting through to them, they are irredeemable fools.
I’m suggesting that Boris keep his powder dry until the UK Brexits.
Cuz if the UK doesn’t Brexit, whisky tariffs will be the least of the UK’s problems.
And if the UK does Brexit, the UK can count on Trump doing a great deal with the UK on whisky imports to the US.
They produce cognac and bourbon, which haven’t been hit with tarriffs. The only motivation I can think of is that this is a way of persuading Britain to make a clean break with the EU and not trying to stay in the customs union or single market.
The UK could do awesomely great deals with the US if it stops kowtowing to the EU.
It’s the UK’s choice.
I hope they choose wisely.
But if they don’t, and I say this as someone who uses products imported from the UK on a daily basis, I have no problem giving up those products if Trump slaps higher tariffs on them. I love my country and I can and will live without my imported stuff.
No it's not. That's like saying a raven haired, pale skinned lass with blue eyes is superior to a golden haired, honey skinned lass with green eyes. They are both to be enjoyed for their different qualities. Each has a time and place.
It is possible to walk and chew gum simultaneously.
Boris is looking maybe three or four moves ahead
I stopped being a drunk decades ago.
And to make a decisons even more difficult, throw in a red head with brown eyes.
