Samsung ends mobile phone production in China

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KS:005930) has ended mobile telephone production in China, it said on Wednesday, hurt by intensifying competition from domestic rivals in the world's biggest smartphone market.

The shutdown of Samsung's last China phone factory comes after it cut production at the plant in the southern city of Huizhou in June and suspended another factory late last year, underscoring stiff competition in the country.

The South Korean tech giant's ceased phone production in China follows other manufacturers shifting production from China due to rising labor costs and the economic slowdown.

Sony also said it was closing its Beijing smartphone plant and would only make smartphones in Thailand...

Samsung, the world's top smartphone maker, said it had taken the difficult decision in a bid to boost efficiency. It added it would however continue sales in China

"The production equipment will be re-allocated to other global manufacturing sites, depending on our global production strategy based on market needs," it said in a statement, without elaborating.

Samsung declined to specify the Huizhou plant's capacity or its numbers of staff. The factory was built in 1992, according to the company.

South Korean media said it employed 6,000 workers and produced 63 million units in 2017.

The big shift out of China is more about wage increases compared to SE Asia then much else. They’re not working for 10 an hour anymore.

Are the Chicoms dumb enough to hold out until Trump actually beats all of his pro Chinese challengers? In 2021 Xi will be in Washington, hat in hand, begging for today’s deal. I think he’ll be SOL.

Yeah, the heart of “the trade war” is that Chinese workers should get more. A winning ‘meme’ for Trump.

Apple has already started locating new production lines (for new products) elsewhere. Foreign investment in new Chinese manufacturing has essentially halted.

Apple will produce new Mac Pro laptops in Texas. Major Apple supplier Foxconn has ramped up their Apple production in other Asian countries, notably India.

When Walmart goes elsewhere for suppliers, somebody turn out the lights.

But tariffs don't work!

Don't believe your lung eyes.

“He’s gonna bring all these jobs back. Well how is he gonna do that?” Obama asked. “What are you gonna do? There’s no answer to it. He says, ‘I’m gonna negotiate a better deal.’ Well, how exactly are you going to negotiate a better deal? What magic wand do you have? And usually the answer is, he doesn’t have an answer.” - Barak Hussein Obama, PBS townhall event in 2016

How many Freepers bought into Obama's and the left's dismal philosophy? Many - and we called them "free traitors."

We had to put up with their GOPe philosophy and their pontificating on "conservatism", calls for country club decorum, and hosannas to shitsticks like Romney, Paul Ryan, and that odious troll McCain. Perhaps it was normalcy bias but I suspect that some of the motivation behind the cheese-eating, surrender monkey attitudes was driven by greed for the proceeds from the fire sale on American prosperity.

Honest to God, I was charging my samsung a month ago and the charger started to shoot sparks and the phone was FIRE hot.

I’m Sure a fire would have started had I not been home.

I guess that can happen with any phone.

But I didn’t really believe the stories until I saw it with my own eyes.

I believe that only the low volume Mac Pro Workstations, not laptops, are to be made in Texas. I remember Apple setting up some iPhone production in Brazil, as well. Could that be ramped up?

"Good riddance."

I couldn't agree more. A lot of them hated Trump and loved #NeverTrump.

This sums up my attitude towards the GOPe:

LOL

People are horrified to lose the house and sure it’s better to have it.

But voting in RINO after RINO isn’t helping.

The senate is a different story because of the judges.

I’d rather ride out 4 years to get rid of or replace the RINOs with real conservatives.

But even the “real” ones seem to stop being real once in office.

...sigh...

If Samsung can do it, Apple can do it.

Excuse me, but Samsung invested billions in communist China, building factories and directly employing Chinese and North Korean workers there. Samsung owned factories, Samsung employees. Apple never built factories in China, and has no employees except sales staff in China.

Apple contracts through a Taiwanese company, and also sources parts from many other countries including the USA. Not so with Samsung.

Re: Apple contracts through a Taiwanese company

True.

But - almost all of its Apple phone factories are located in Mainland China - not Taiwan.

I believe the Taiwan company is “Foxconn.”
