IMO impeaching Johnson for violating the Tenure of Office Act was simply a construct for impeaching him and the real reason is that he wasn't being "tough" enough on the South. That SCOTUS later deemed the Tenure of Office Act unconstitutional shows it for the purpose it was enacted.
Just checked back in at PowerLine, and the natives are restless: 250± comments on this article, mostly excoriating Hinderaker on the same bases we are.
Impeachment of President Trump is a big, “In yo face, America” from the ‘RAT Party to the American people. When you can’t win with the voters, impeach, impeach, impeach. They’re a bunch of losers.
U too think it’s serious because it’s an attack on me.
BS. Trial - high crimes and misdemeanors - presided over by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court - of course it is a legal act. It's just the the Senate as an elected body has jurisdiction to try the charges, not the judiciary.
No it doesn't. It gives that power to the Senate who have the sole power of trial.
They are using their Watergate techniques, using words like ‘beleguered” and “embattled.” Pieces like this are designed to cause depression and despair. We have been fighting a civil war that is entering a new phase.
The question is how news of impeachment impacts 1) swing voters, and 2) turnout.
There is another question, which is front and center. Will RINOs survive if they don't start to show a spine instead of acting like some sort of deal could be made to get Trump out. It's not swing voters who will determine their fate. It is Trump's base who will have them swinging from lamp posts - I am speaking figuratively here.
“More than 60 percent of Americans believe President Trumps phone call to the leader of Ukraine asking him to launch an investigation into a 2020 Democratic political rival is serious, a poll released Sunday shows.”
GD right its serious! We want to know WTH the demoncrats did and the facts behind their sordid acts!
Well most people don’t even know what Watergate was. All I know is that this kabuki theater is already helping to raise tons of money for Trump Victory in 2020. It makes the Fake Indian a near-lock to win the nomination, and that’s also a good thing.
The best part is that they have to sit and keep their pie holes shut.
I wonder if the chief justice can require the senate to not speak about any of it in public? Like they can do to any jury?
Dont know about that part.
I dont quite follow. The Constitution gives the House, and only the House, the power to impeach a president. The Senate has no say at all in impeachment.
The Senate comes into play after an impeachment has occurred. Then the Senate can remove the president from office, after a trial.
Did Trump skip breakfast? Impeachable offense.
It's so easy even a wokeflake can do it!
No it doesn’t. It gives that power to the Senate who have the sole power of trial.
I suspect this will backfire - the Dem base will be part of the backfire.

Agree, GOPJ. And having just visited Democrat Underground, I suspect almost none of the Dems’ moderate “base” comments on that forum. That’s the radical fringe, 90% of whom are infected with TDS.
But it is indeed a sad note, that even with a full transcript and Biden admitting on video that he forced the prosecutor to be fired, the media can twist things around.
The saving grace is that PDJT is extremely shrewd and adept at leading the media and Dems into traps.
He successfully struck a blow to the Squad only a few weeks ago. Now he’s working to distance the Democratic Party completely from its moderate base.
The 50 Democrat House Reps who represent Trump districts are going to regret their boldness.
Let’s hope they go the next step to actually impeach. When they do that, Trump and McConnell have a surprise waiting for them.
Modern politics is great theater — theater of the absurd.
The fact that the Senate, an inherently political body, acts as both the venue and the jury necessarily defines impeachment as a purely political exercise. Legal standards do not apply—only what the Majority Leader declares and a majority of senators vote for. If you still disagree, recall Sen. Arlen Spector’s arcane reliance on “Scottish law” as his stated rationale for exonerating Bill Clinton two decades ago.
Just watch!
This isn’t really about impeachment. It’s about damaging Pres. Trump. There can be accusations day after day during some hearings or press conference etc., supplemented by the occasional fake news leak.
_That_ is how it is done.
Orson Welles and War of the Worlds???
No he’s right there’s a big danger here. Just ignoring it, laughing it off etc. and counting on the average “middle of the road” type to say “Oh those Democrats have gone too far” will result in a Democrat being sworn in in 2021. Anyone thinking that way is delusional.
It can be effectively countered, but it will take a significant effort. They’ll need to spend a lot of that money they’ve just raised to point out what’s actually going on.
