This would very likely require legislative approval and would result in New Mexico dealers selling clown cars that offer little protection in the case of collision, especially with heavy truck.

NM residents need to contact their legislators to prevent this imposition on our freedom to chose our own vehicle for transportation.

The Trump administration announced last week that states can’t impose stricter standards than the federal requirement.

Why not 100 miles per gallon?

Or 200 miles per gallon?

They’ll have everyone on fuel-efficient motorcycles, eventually.

Will look like a street in Vietnam.

I think we have a FReeper or two in Vietnam right now.

Why not 152 mpg? Or 500 mpg? Why continue poisoning your citizens and those suffering illegals?

Only 52 mpg? This yet another example of how stupid and shortsighted the government is. If more money was allocated to develop perpetual motion machines, we could easily get to infinite mpg by 2022.

How does a state enforce this? Can a car purchased in another state not be brought to NM?

Glad I don’t live there. Here’s what’s going to happen: they will grant exemptions for all native Americans and hispanics who drive pickup trucks.

Then the only people affected will be bureaucrats and college personnel. Serves ‘em right.

I lived in NM and its a very rural state with lots of poor people who can only afford old automoboiles and beaters.. So rural that such high emission standards are crazy and will not clean up any “dirty air” there. Maybe Albuquerque has a minor problem.

MLG must think the oil companies are involved in a conspiracy to keep 1000 MPG cars away from us....

Didn’t anyone see where Trump effectively banned California’s similar regulations?

Violation of the commerce clause. If the cars are not built in NM, then they are affecting interstate commerce by denying manufacturers the ability to sell in their state. Or by forcing the manufacturers to change their manufacturing processes, thereby affecting the commerce of other states.

You will be forced to buy a smart car or some other death trap that will dramatically increase the traffic fatality
rate in the state,

Of course, this will do nothing. There will be so many exceptions written into the law that it will ultimately apply to 1 or 2 cars. However, the virtue signal has been sent.

There are zero gasoline powered cars that meet the standard. The only cars residents in NM will be able to buy are electric vehicles or compact hybrid cars. I imagine NM will become like Cuba where people drive around their cars forever replacing the engines and like or they take a trip to another state to buy a regular car.
