A Facebook campaign ad from an upstate New York county’s Republican Party has been slammed as anti-Semitic and “deeply disturbing.”
Titled “A storm is brewing in Rockland,” the video takes aim at the large and growing hasidic Jewish community in the county, the specter of “overdevelopment” and a proposed yeshiva campus.
The video, which appeared to have been removed on Thursday morning, features menacing music, the slogan “If They Win, We Lose” and a warning that “they” will “change our way of life.”
“Aron Wieder and his Ramapo bloc are plotting a takeover,” the video intones, referring to a Hasidic legislator representing a Rockland County town with a large Orthodox population. The ad warns that “chaotic development” and redistricting threaten “our” home, schools, families — and water.
“This video is deeply disturbing....denounce this hateful video.”
The Republican Party chairman in Rockland County, Lawrence Garvey, defended the video in a Facebook post on the party’s page.
“Regardless of your thoughts of the video, there are facts that cannot be ignored. This is not, nor has it ever been a religious issue. It is an issue of right and wrong,” he wrote. “For those not living in Rockland, it is harder to see a real and unique problem that exists here. The people of Rockland have become desperate for attention to the problems facing our communities and many live every day with the threat of losing their homes and neighborhoods.
“Anyone who dares speak up about overdevelopment, corruption, or education is immediately labeled as anti-Semitic without any concern for facts or without any idea of the true issues at hand.”
The Republican Jewish Coalition in a tweet called the video “absolutely despicable” and “pure anti-Semitism.”

Okay, no Hasidics, but we’ve got a shitload of illegal Hispanics from Central America who need a home. Meet your new neighbors, MS-13, Miss 7 kids, unaccompanied children, an occasional drug dealer looking for a new base of operation, ESL (English as a Second Language) coming to all your schools, bilingual publications, and Alexandra Occasionally Conscious Marxist fool coming up to help them.
At least the Hasids are patriotic Americans and speak English and Hebrew and Yiddish and probably a couple dozen other languages.
Not all Hasid neighborhoods are like this. Some in NW Baltimore are absolutely wonderful places to live (my friends lived there earlier and I knew every street in the hood).
They are also a bulwark against the spread of the black underclass that has ripped apart so many once safe and wonderful neighborhoods in NW Baltimore (I knew and played in every one of them, went to schools in several and dated girls from there. The neighborhoods were safe back then.
You could walk to shual, school, the neighborhood drug store for a Coddie and a Coke, play at the local bowling alley, and walk home safely after school or at night.
No way Josie that you can do that in the Forest Park/Liberty Heights/ Randallstown Road, and esp. Lower/middle and part of Upper Park Heights Avenue, even if you are carrying. Forget Gywn Oak Junction. Total loss, just north of North Avenue and Penn. Ave., some of the killing ground central areas of Baltimore. Once safe for my grandmother and mother/uncles. Now a dumping ground for victims of shoot-outs and drug gangs.
This whole issue is financial, not based on religion or ethnicity. Jews of different branches have as much a problem with this as any Gentile.
This issue is financial - and that IS how America is defined.
All the more reason to initiate detente.
I was born and raised in Rockland; lived there for 43 years. I know personally how unpleasant it is to have a Hasidic community for neighbors.
They are an unpleasant, entitled, dirty bunch of people. They are invading Orange County now and taking and wanting broad swaths of land there.
No it’s nice to say these things. But all of us - Democrat and Republican and Snowflakes all agree on it. Some of us are bold enough to say it.
To a large extent they live on welfare fraud, and illegal drug sales and prostitution in NYC and Jersey.
Oh, and if one their unlicensed, uninsured drivers of a yeshiva bus ever totals your car in Spring Valley tough tits for you.

It would be easy to dismiss your previous post with the usual condemnations, which are too well known to rehearse here. But as a Chassid, I study kaballistic teachings, which teaches me that even outright lies have to have an element of truth to keep them going. Otherwise, they would have no currency and would soon be forgotten. So, while I have known Chassidim of many different stripes, and know that they are not all saintly and very few even approach that level, and in fact there are even some unsavory characters among them, whom I’ve known personally, you are painting with too broad a brush. But the fact that you are doing so with such conviction tells me what I already know from other threads on this subject, that upstate residents do have some legitimate beefs, that they do rightly perceive themselves as being invaded and put upon, and that that isn’t how it should be, and certainly not how it has to be.
The question I must ask myself as a Chabad Chassid is what can I do to help. I’ll have to do some research to find people of authority Chassidic community, and get into communication with them. I’ll get back to you. If you have some names and phone numbers that might be useful, please communicate them to me privately.
I can’t promise anything just yet, and my time is limited by geography and my personal life, and the fact that I’m no politician or lawyer. But I’ll be getting started FWIW.
The Hasidic (ultra-Orthodox Jewish people) are engaging in ethnic cleansing as they colonize municipalities with the goal of pushing out Gentiles except for a small number of Hispanic residents who they allow (as their servants.) The Hasidic are engaging in shameful behavior. What is the shameful behavior?
(1) Aggressively soliciting people to sell their homes to them by using scare tactics. (You will be the only gentile left)
Being bad neighbors - littering their own lawns with toys left astray, failing to upkeep the property, failing to show common courtesy to non-Hasidic people (would it kill them to say please and thank you? - God forbid, hold the door for a person entering the store right behind them instead of letting it slam in people’s faces?), teaching their children to stay away from non-Hasidic children (actually saying, in Yiddish, “get away from that “goy” or even worse, that “schvartzer”.) Goy is a derogatory term for gentile and schvartzer is a derogatory term for African-American. As a group, they are bigoted and racist.
Once they own some property on a block they deliberately rent to bad tenants with the intent of lowering property values so they scoop up the rest of the houses on the block after the original homeowners panic and sell out. Once they own all the houses on the block they kick out the bad tenants and move themselves in.
(2)Shamefully filing religious discrimination lawsuits (RLUIPA) to bypass local zoning laws so they can build high-density housing which, once occupied, will later have illegal basement apartments that will not be inspected and no code will be enforced
(3) Shamefully packing the public school board and with the clear intention of diverting funds from the public schools to their own private schools. Also packing the council, planning, zoning, etc.
(4) Shamefully getting married at a very young age and having large families without any means of support and without any intention of looking for a job. The healthy, able-bodied young fathers will spend their days leisurely studying ancient religious texts while their wives struggle with baby after baby collecting welfare - section 8, food stamps, medicaid, every benefit available - all thanks to the American taxpayer.
(5) Shamefully keeping their young males ignorant by failing to teach them any useful trade or providing any academic preparation for a profession.
(6) Shamefully failing to properly teach their young males the English language.
(7) Shamefully buying corrupt politicians with their block vote.
(8) Shamefully taking over neighboring municipality’s parks (that they don’t pay taxes to maintain) then leaving their garbage strewn about making no effort to clean up after themselves.
The Hasidic are very bad neighbors and the residents of Rockland County are correct in pushing back.

So they’re all dirt poor welfare recipients, but

So they are able to get a mortgage commitment underwritten and plonk down earnest money, not once, but for all the houses on the block and build high-density housing, too. And what’s more keep some Hispanics around as servants? Not bad for welfare recipients.
If Hasidim were “ethnically cleansing” Rockland County, they’re taking their time about it and doing a poor job. Kiryas Joel, Monroe, Monsey, New Square and Spring Valley have had a Hasidic population for a long time, and yet there are still Gentiles about, some like you with interesting notions about Hasidic society.
Young men do study in “Kolel” for the first couple of years after marriage, with the help of in-laws and working wives. But as soon as the children start getting numerous enough to be expensive, they get work, either with the help of family, or vocational training of some sort. They do manage to pick up English, and to prosper. I’ve worked with a Hasidic real estate developer (no high-density houses upstate, but nice new brownstones in Brooklyn), known a Hasid who owns a chain of dry cleaning stores, and turns the profits of one over to charitable purposes, and there are more than a few contractors, diamond merchants and traders.
Myself, I was born to a secular left-wing family, and later became persuaded to join the Chabad movement, and after getting a two-year degree worked as a paralegal for eighteen years, then in the food industry (dairy farms, then deli in Winn Dixie), before emigrating to Israel, where I work as a sofer stam (scribe; caligrapher) and sometimes a freelance writer.
I’m sorry you don’t like your Chassidic neighbors. I make no apologies for their quirks, which vary, while their considerable virtues are not hard to discover, either, once you get past the surface.
But there is nothing shameful about having children. They eventually grow up and move out, and they have to move somewhere. Both the Chassidim and the non-Chassidim in Rockland need to put their heads together and plan this in an orderly fashion. All this pushing back and forth is avoidable and not at all desirable. Ghetto-ization in Brooklyn is not an answer either.
They have no shame about sucking off the government's teat as a lifestyle choice.
The Hasidic town you mention, Kiryas Joel, has the distinction of being the poorest place in America. According to the New York Times, 50% of the residents receive food stamps, and one-third are on Medicaid and get federal vouchers to help pay their housing costs.

The Hasidic communities are parasites. It's not sustainable. If they paid their own way and kept to themselves like the Amish no one would have a problem. Instead, they take over towns and behave very badly. Corruption is rampant.
You mention that some Hasids are successful. Even the successful ones try to get on the government teat. Two years ago, 26 people were convicted of lying to the government about their income in order to fraudulently receive welfare. Two of the couples had income over 1 million dollars. Americans need to learn about how these Hasidic communities are taking advantage of our generosity and put pressure on the federal, state and local governments to stamp out the abuse.
We need systemic change to stop this abuse of our welfare programs.
And,the leaders of these communities need to stop encouraging their young men to be dead-beat dads.
Suddenly the NY Times is a reliable source? Yes, there are people who take advantage of the welfare system. But this is not everyone or even most people, or even predominantly Hasidim. Poorest place in America? Poorer than in Mississippi or Arkansas, Puerto Rico or the rust belt? On the contrary, there is a support network between Williamsburg and Boro Park and Upstate. The people are all related, and help set up the younger generation to start out in life. Interest free loan societies and vocational schools are available.

I have yet to meet a Chassidic man over 30 who hasn’t picked up English or is still sitting and studying in Kolel. It’s really not much of a leap from Yiddish to English, especially since those young men sitting in kolel and studying also speak as a matter of course Hebrew and Aramaic, the languages used in their ancient texts, and quite a few speak Hungarian and/or Polish or Russian as well. I don’t know those European languages, but while commuting to and from work by subway I studied Arabic and Ancient Greek, as well as finishing Shakespeare, Ezra Pound’s Cantos, Wordsworth’s Prelude and numerous books of litcrit. No, I don’t have a bachelor’s degree. Nowadays, a bachelor’s degree tends to leave people less employable than they were before. But I have seen Chassidic men working lumber over a circular saw near the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and when I was much younger worked alongside them at an offset printing house.
I agree that corruption and welfare fraud should be stomped out. Who could disagree with that.
As for the leaders of the communities, I suggest you go to them and speak your mind as honestly as you have spoken to me, and ask for their cooperation in a joint venture to make their congregations’ presence less egregious to you. And also give me their phone numbers, and I’ll do what I can from my end.
