When we looked when I was mayor of the city of Newark, about all the shootings that we had — and this wasn’t scientific, but we just did a cursory survey — we could only find one instance — one instance — where a homicide in my city was done with someone who had acquired a gun legally. And that was a terrible case of depression, where someone killed themselves but in the process killed their child. That was a correctional officer. But every other shooting in our city was done with someone who could not legally buy a gun.

Wonderful "reasoning" to build gun control on.

IOW, making MORE laws to make it harder to get a gun won't change a thing because a corrections officer will still have one and the criminals will still continue to ignore the more numerous and restrictive gun laws and procure guns illegally.

As I'm sure you know, in the State of NJ in order to purchase a firearm you must file papers (including references) and submit payment with your local sheriff AND get fingerprinted. Once you get your ID card, then you can purchase long guns that aren't banned in NJ.

If you to purchase a pistol, you basically have to go through another round of paperwork (and payment) for EACH PISTOL PURCHASE. Further, after that paperwork is processed (which can take up to 90 days) you are sent what is basically a coupon that gives you the "right" to purchase a pistol...for 90 days. If you don't buy the pistol in that 90 day period, the coupon expires (as does your right).

Small wonder Sen Booker's Newark saw one homicide with a "legal" firearm, and in this case it was likely a service pistol. And yet, all of these gymnastics to legally exercise a guaranteed right isn't enough for Spartacus. Maybe he can propose eliminating bad weather to help stop blackouts.
