President Trump on Sunday ordered U.S. flags to half-staff as "mark of solemn respect" for the victims of weekend mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.
"Our Nation mourns with those whose loved ones were murdered in the tragic shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, and we share in the pain and suffering of all those who were injured in these two senseless attacks," Trump said in a proclamation released by the White House.
"We condemn these hateful and cowardly acts," he added. "Through our grief, America stands united with the people of El Paso and Dayton.
"May God be with the victims of these two horrific crimes and bring aid and comfort to their families and friends."
Flags will be flown at half-staff at federal facilities until sunset on Thursday.
At least 20 people were killed on Saturday at a Walmart in El Paso. Hours later, nine people died when a gunman opened fire at a bar in Dayton.

It almost seems unusual when the flag is flying proudly at full staff because every single day in America there is always a "good reason" -- out of respect; out of honor, etc. etc. -- to lower the flag because someone -- even in these instances where there are many -- has died. I hope everyone understands what I'm trying to say here and that I am in no way being disrepectful of the victims or attempting to minimize the horror of what has happened. I am not.

Not interested in this ‘collective’ mourning ‘habit’ that the news media promotes for political advantage anymore.... But lowering the flag was a proper enough jester to sustain the nations calmness.
And so....they’re not getting my prayers nor my thoughts as they spew now on the airwaves to garner support for more gun laws.
Lowering the flag is just to sustain calm in the nation....this is being promoted as a Race/Gun issue by the media...who in todays world is our worst enemy anymore!

BOOM-shaka-laka! That should be the response to everybody who tries to blame the shootings in El Paso, Dayton and Gilroy on President Trump and, by extension, his supporters.

It isn’t that don’t feel grief and sympathy for those murdered and affected by this, I but I grit my teeth every time we lower the flag to half mast for these kinds of things.
I feel that it puts us in a mode of perpetual victimhood. It makes the gesture meaningless.
Every time some Senator like Kennedy or McCain dies, down it goes. A President I understand. I understand 9/11. But Whitney Houston? Bob Hope, one could make an argument for even if I loved what he stood for but would oppose it on principle.
I can’t how many times I have seen the flag at half mast over the last 30 years or so and thought “Huh. I wonder what the flag is at half mast for again.”

Gotta ask.......Who is organizing all day this??? Too many shootings too soon to not be part of some “plan”. Political? To force rescinding of 2nd Amendment? With shooters willing to die?......stopped only by being shot (with 3 of the 4 shooters dead.) “Suicide shooters”? Taking a lesson from suicide bombers?

Trivializing is not even what worries me. I’m sick of the constant prostrate position we seem to be in, lowering it. This did not happen before 9/11. And frankly, NONE of the atrocities comes anywhere close to that, nor were they foreign attacks. This sickening nonsense has to stop.

YOU are Absolutely correct. I get sopissed driving into work and seeing AGAIN US flag lowered! I’m asking my husband WHY NOW?
And now the governors are into it! US flag might be up, but state flag is down!
This NEVER happened before 9/11. Now it’s every freakin week.

It also bothers me when I see American flag patches on police officer's uniforms. ARE THEY NATIONAL POLICE? NO! They SHOULD have their State flag on their uniforms NOT the American flag! THIS SHOULD BE RESERVED FOR OUR MILITARY SERVICE MEMBERS ONLY BECAUSE ONLY THEY ARE SERVING TO PROTECT OUR FLAG!
Lowering the flag for CIVILIAN massacres and application of the American flag on LOCAL police uniforms CHEAPENS THE UNIQUE ROLE AND SERVICE OUR HEROIC MILITARY MEMBERS PERFORM!!
