It wasn’t - China was already far too strong at that point, and I remember their negotiations with the UK - no matter what protections the UK came up with, China would not agree to anything that questioned their ultimate authority over the Hong Kong - that was a non-starter for them, totally out of the question. They would have needed to be liberated from the UK prior to WW2, before Mao took over (as happened with Taiwan). Remember, Mao fought us to a draw in Korea, there was no way he was going to let Hong Kong get cut loose and independent.

Yes.

It still is.

PRC have breached the agreement. It’s an international treaty.

People act as if Hong Kongers aren’t people and have no rights and as if the agreement for PRC to have responsibility for protecting Hong Kong is some sort of divine decree.

It wasn’t.

If a party breaches, the agreement becomes void.
