I don't think it's that they think people are stupid.

I think they are simply too invested in a narrative, and sticking to it is the path of least resistance.

Changing their tune now will just open them up to charges of flip-flopping, will subject them to challenging questions, and will put them on the defensive.

It's easier for them to stay the course.
