It was in the footnotes, for example, where the FBI appears to have misled the FISA court in its application to spy on Carter Page obscuring its reliance on opposition research, the Steele dossier, financed by the Hillary Clinton campaign.
The more than 2,000 footnotes included in Special Counsel Robert Muellers report on Trump-Russia collusion allegations are also illuminating. Most of the citations are matter-of-fact support for claims made in the main text. But a close reading reveals that many of the footnotes raise more questions than they answer, especially regarding Muellers methods and intent.
Some footnotes show that key allegations often rely on the flimsy say-so of media accounts; others show a willingness to accept the claims of anti-Trump critics at face value. Mueller and his team also used the footnotes as the place to include unsubstantiated gossip and speculation.
Mueller has made it clear that during his scheduled testimony before Congress on Wednesday, he will not discuss his investigation beyond the four corners of his official report. But those four corners encompass not only the main text, but thousands of footnotes.
If Robert Mueller is going to defend his document, he will have to be prepared to defend the footnotes too. It is there where the strengths and weaknesses of the Mueller report are most clearly on display. Come Wednesdays hearings, the advantage may go to the questioners who know where to look.

This is going to be a major clown show...
A long article the GOP better read it..woth the time if you have it..
This will be a nothing burger and the media is going to morph it into an 8 course meal in which to “unpack” for the coming weeks.
Kinda like transforming a meaningless 13 seconds into a one week hysteria.
It’s all so predictable.
If muller goes outside the report with even a sentence of additional information, the door is opened for the universe of material to be scrutinized.
yes...the most amazing thing is watching these people act like they’re important and every thing they say has some kind of deep meaning when it’s all hyperbole and gibberish! And they’re truly shocked that their ratings are in the tank!
Despite the admonition from the DOJ to stick to the confines of the report, never forget: Mueller, the Dems and the media are running this show. He will leverage every issue, every question, every response in a direction away from any attempt at getting to the truth.
Hate to be so negative, but I've been waiting for the 'next shoe to drop' since the Clinton years.
Excellent article. The GOP better be prepared. This is the opportunity to bury Mueller and the Dems.
Let us consider the Four Mutants - yet another media created Kardashian phenomenon explicitly crafted to sell advertising space. Hot for the moment, soon to fade like Happy Days, perhaps to return in the distant future in late night syndication.
The whole thing is a repetitive stupid joke. And the ironic part? FR is part of the media enterprise as well - if it wasn't for these types of articles inciting comments, where would the forum be?
Semantic
You are so right. Everybodys got to eat. And FR is just another feeding trough (so to speak.... and in more ways than one)
Time to slop the pigs.
And then there is the foundational body of information that allows us to ID where we are on the long arc of history. CWII is coming, and while the daily clown shows are entertaining, the real game is assessing the macro position.
“Some footnotes show that key allegations often rely on the flimsy say-so of media accounts”
The entire case against the Russian facebook “Media Research Center” operation came from a single magazine article. Mueller literally cribbed the whole article for his indictment like a kid rehashing a wikipedia article for his homework assignment.
That was a good read. Thanks for posting it.
Yep, lots of hogwash. At least on FR one is capable of getting some useful commentary on the hogwash of the day.
