What If Colleges Used Only Test Scores to Fill Campuses?
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 23, 2019 | Douglas Belkin

As Americans debate the roles of wealth, race and access in higher education, researchers at Georgetown University wondered: What would the nation’s most selective colleges and universities look like if they admitted students solely on the basis of SAT scores?

Their answer: The most prestigious U.S. campuses would be wealthier, whiter and more male—leading researchers to question the role standardized testing plays in a fair, comprehensive admissions process.

More than half the students now enrolled at the top 200 colleges and universities would lose their seats to students who performed better on the test—and the median SAT score would rise by 70 points to 1320, the study found.

The biggest losers in this reshuffling were black and Latino students, whose numbers would be cut nearly in half, to 11% of all students from 19%. The share of Asian students would slip to 10% from 11%. The principal winners were wealthy white male students, whose ranks would increase. But a large number of white students would lose their seats and be replaced with other white students.

“The affluent have extraordinary advantages in college admissions,” said Anthony P. Carnevale, director of Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, which performed the analysis. Until 2005, Mr. Carnevale was a vice president at Educational Testing Service, which is a client of The College Board and administers the SAT.

Many elite colleges consider a range of factors such as grades, extracurricular activities and teacher recommendations in what they call a holistic admissions approach. They also try to build a diverse student body and might look for students from underrepresented ethnic or racial backgrounds or geographical regions.

The holistic admissions process has come under fire following the disclosure this spring of the biggest cheating ring federal prosecutors say they have ever seen.

unless you are going for engineering, law, or medicine, Some variant on STEM discipline, I just don’t think college is necessary any more.

I guess I'm in the minority in that I went to college, not to train for a job, but to get an education. I just wanted to learn stuff.

My degree is in History and for a while I seriously entertained the thought of going to grad school, getting my PhD, then attending Diesel Driving Academy and driving a truck for a living.

Perhaps minority graduation rates would increase if they attended schools that better match their abilities.

it would be a godsend. Those who are smart and capable deserve the better things in life - the rest of ya’ll can pour over your scriptures and rote memorization along with every charm, prayer and phony blessing you want.

The Spoils go to the Victors.

If prayer isn’t working, I suggest good old fashioned hard work and effort.

The Discipline of History is a powerful lens in which to understand the present, how do you know where you are going, until you know where you have been?

IQ is a test score.

Mrs Dearolddad and I had a friend with a very high IQ. He had a tough time remembering to tie his shoes.

We surely can’t allow a system that would benefit white males, that would be “racist”.

I wonder how this would come out if you normed it for income. For instance, look at only affluent test takers and weigh so minority’s are in the sample proportional to their population percentage.

Who cares if someone has an IQ of 150 if they can't even tell you how many amendments are in the Bill of Rights?

Or, by the same token, they can tell you how many amendments there are, but not what they are and how they function in a constitutional sense.

” I don’t think SAT/ACT test scores alone should be used”

It should be the sole criteria.

There is no better measure of educational achievement than a measure of KNOWLEDGE.

There are thousands of kids today who graduate HS with a 4.0+ GPA that are objectively stupid. But they’ve been told their entire lives that if they focus, work hard and play by the rules they can he YOUR heart surgeon. Or your 737 pilot.

With an IQ of 91.

Our entire society has been reworked to enable these kids to achieve the pinnacles of success.

IMHO it’s one of the few major contributors to the downfall of Western Civilization.

If only the highest test scores were admitted, SJW departments would completely disappear.

Exactly. The original merit measure. And it did a lot of that. Now those who rose by merit not surprisingly tend to be clustered in the upper income and upper middle class. As a result it looks like the SAT is less merit-based than it is. The skewing toward higher incomes for their offspring is actually a sign of it having worked, not it being unfair.

It seems that’s the point of college. Anyone can remember 10 but you need some intelligence to learn and retain multiple complex subjects.

Obama would have never gotten into Columbia or Harvard Law if not for being black and having an Islamic name. He would have never been President of the Harvard Law Review either.

He was a “B” high school student. A white male would have zero chance with those grades.

Not everyone goes to college for money. Some go to learn.

If we only have college for STEM and got rid of everything else, we’d have a very stupid civilization who knew nothing of history, ethics, literature, political science, and philosophy.

The ancient Greeks thought that stuff was quite important. So did people during the Renaissance. The reformation movement was lead by artists and philosophers. America’s founding fathers were philosophers. Philosophers don’t always make much money, but they change the world more than anyone who does have money.

The “asian” category probably includes American Indians and Hawaiians. The Gubermint has all sorts of categories we plebes aren’t aware of. They also consider Middle Easterners as white. I wonder how many of those asian students are here from overseas to study and how many are born here.
