U.S. SOCCER STARS EMBARRASS THEMSELVES AT WOMEN’S WORLD CUP
Powerline ^ | 12 June 2019 | Paul Mirengoff

Yesterday at the Women’s World Cup, the U.S. defeated Thailand 13-0. The lopsidedness of the result is further proof that the tournament is a second rate sporting event.

Soccer is the world’s game, but women’s soccer is not. Not many countries take women’s soccer seriously and, with the possible exception of the U.S., those that do don’t take it nearly as seriously as they take men’s soccer.

Hence, mismatches like the U.S.-Thailand farce. There just aren’t enough competent women’s teams in some continents to make up a strong world cup field.

At the real World Cup, a mismatch like yesterday’s is nearly impossible. If the best men’s team from Europe or South America played the worst team from Asia or North America, one would expect a 4-6 goal margin of victory. 13-0 is unheard of.

It’s true that Germany defeated Estonia 8-0 yesterday in a men’s game, but not in the World Cup. The Estonia team could never qualify for the World Cup as that tournament is presently constituted. And 8-0 isn’t 13-0.

The U.S. rout over Thailand has given rise to a pair of controversies: (1) should the U.S. have run up the score and (2) should U.S. players have indulged in major celebrations after scoring the late goals.

I can understand, I personally have coached and I know enough to win graciously, and also be certain the game is put away before playing with inexperienced players who will benefit from more playing time. But this tournament is structured with minimal substitutions and a benefit to a high goal differential. I would say it goes with this match structure and it does brighten up the game to have a lot of scoring.

The US women did dominate the game, and others will also dominate the Thailand team. They will be better in future world cups.

Blame the system for encouraging this, not the players or coaches for doing their jobs.

I’d agree that there’s not enough good women’s teams to fill the brackets, so this happens. Many countries don’t have much women’s soccer. In a sense, they set up Thailand to fail like this. It needs addressing by FIFA.

As far as running up the score and celebrating...this is the World Cup, it only comes every four years and some only get one opportunity. Many players on a team rarely get to score. So in the *first* game what are they supposed to do? Not score? Not celebrate?

The tactic of wasting time by moving the ball into the corners of the field and go nowhere only applies to when you’re trying to protect a lead. Why would you do that when you’re up by more than five goals?

It would still be considered insulting - we’d have had to do it for most of the second half. It would be boring and not what the fans paid for. The issue is having bad teams in the tournament.

The biggest issue, for me, is that the Thailand coach didn’t substitute the goalkeeper. It wasn’t fair on her - now having the worst goalkeeping statistic in World Cup history against her name.

Running up the score isn’t the issue. Most likely the other teams in the group are going to win by similar scores against Thailand, so every goal counts.

I would be in favor of a skunk rule, though, for cases like this.

Do we need an international treaty that requires nations and spectators to take women's soccer as seriously as men's soccer? Perhaps the requirement should be that women's soccer be taken more seriously than men's due to the historic lack of seriousness. There must be mandated equal(and reparational doubling) pay, equal publicity, equal sponsorship, equal number of spectators, equal ticket price.

My girls played soccer in high school. Often the boys would be playing in adjacent fields. The difference in intensity, speed, aggressiveness and overall quality of play was staggering.

The US women lost 5-2 to a group of U15 boys (not even a national team)

Those U15 boys probably could beat the Men's National team now.

How many of the US team’s members are actually men in verbal drag?

Thailand doesn’t have much competition in their region. Most of those countries are Muslim, and don’t even have women’s teams.

Do US Taxpayers’ revenue bank roll the training, equipment, travel, etc. for this team?
