It obviously means that the years of grievance training kicked in, and some of the students who were alert and paying attention perceived a slight. The were not about to miss an opportunity to agitate, based on the foolish and insensitive comments by one stupid tour guide.
What a sad way to go through life!
1. You are assuming that there was not a watermelon.
2. The students may have been naturally agitated/disruptive.
