In the 1890 Manifesto, the LDS Church banned polygamy. When Utah applied for statehood again, it was accepted. One of the conditions for granting Utah statehood was that a ban on polygamy be written into the state constitution. This was a condition required of other western states that were admitted into the Union later. Statehood was officially granted on January 4, 1896.
In the summer of 1912, the colonies were evacuated due to anti-American sentiment during the Mexican Revolution and many of their citizens left for the United States and never returned. Some colonists did eventually return to their settlements, but today only Colonia Juárez and Colonia Dublán in the Casas Grandes river valley remain active. The Colonia Juárez Chihuahua México Temple, built in 1999, is located in Colonia Juárez, and is currently the smallest temple the LDS Church operates.
I have wondered for some time if Mitt has some unresolved affection for Mexico.
about that 1890 manifesto...
there had to be another one about 10 years later, and then another one later again...
the guy who was the Mormon “president and profit” in 1890 still kept his extra “wives” and later “married” more young girls...
the Mormon kleaders after him all had several “wives”...
the last Mormon leader who was a polygamist was the leader until he died in the 1940s with at least 2 of the wives still alive...
Meanwhile back in 1890ish when Utah sent their first elected Senator to Washington he couldn’t be seated because he was a polygamous which the voters knew about beforehand...SEVEN MILLION signatures were gathered from around the country in a petition to stop him from being seated and he was sent back home to Utah...
so much for that 1890 manifesto...
Also Big Daddy George Romney was born into a polygamous family ...his father, grandfather etc all had several wives...
Sonny Boy Willard has never denounced polygamy...
