Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg called for everything honoring Thomas Jefferson to be renamed.
“Yeah, we’re doing that in Indiana. I think it’s the right thing to do,” Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said in a Friday radio interview with conservative host Hugh Hewitt.
“There’s a lot, of course, to admire in his thinking and his philosophy,” Buttigieg said of the author of the Declaration of Independence and the nation’s third president.
“But then again, if you plunge into his writings, especially the ‘Notes on the State of Virginia,’ you know that he knew slavery was wrong. And yet he did it,” he explained.

I want Buttigieg renamed to Butthole.
Yes, selling his slaves would not have improved their situation and most likely have made it worse. To emancipate slaves was not an easy process in Virginia in part because the state did not want the freedmen to be destitute and surviving either at public expense or by crime. Jefferson was deeply in debt so he was not in a position to free all of his slaves like Washington was (although he would not necessarily have chosen to do so if he had not been in debt). He managed to free a few of his slaves in his will—the children of Sally Hemings (but not Sally herself).
