it started with the rise of the "professional" political class - if politics is your profession, then you are a know-nothing, glad-handing, manipulator of public sentiment. That describes most of the media also.

I agree entirely. Adding insult to injury, they are treated like celebrities, become wealthy in office, are extremely egotistical, and actually think they are the ‘brightest and the best’.
