KENTUCKY DERBY TROPHY

Since the 50th running of the Kentucky Derby in 1924, Churchill Downs has annually presented a gold trophy to the winning owner of the famed "Run for the Roses."

History is unclear if a trophy was presented in 1875 to the winner of the first Kentucky Derby, and trophy presentations were sporadically made in following years. Finally, in 1924, legendary Churchill Downs President Matt Winn commissioned that a standard design be developed for the "Golden Anniversary" of the Derby.

Outside of the jeweled embellishments that were added to note special Derby anniversaries in 1949 (75th), 1974 (100th), and 1999 (125th), only one change has been made to the original design. For the 125th Kentucky Derby in 1999, Churchill Downs officials decided to defer to racing lore and change the direction of the decorative horseshoe displayed on the 14-karat gold trophy.

Canteen Mission Statement

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

HISTORY OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY

Founded as the Louisville Jockey Club in 1874, the original Churchill Downs was built by Col. M. Lewis Clark, the grandson of the famed explorer. Inspired by England’s Epsom Derby, Churchill Downs hosted the first Kentucky Derby in 1875.

Named for the original owners of the property, Churchill Downs is known for its famous twin spires, built in 1895.

In 2004, the facility underwent a $120 million modernization, replacing much of the mammoth Victorian-era grandstand with luxury suites.

Seats on Millionaire’s Row cost $50,000 (and up) for a table for eight. Suites are priced at $259,000 to $305,000 for two days, including Friday’s Kentucky Oaks program. Reserved clubhouse seats (including lunch and open bar) fetch $1,776 per person (also for two days). General admission (infield, Derby day only) is $40.

Of 133 Derby winners, 100 were born in Kentucky, followed by Florida (six) and Virginia (four). California has produced three Derby winners: Morvich (1922), Swaps (1955) and Decidedly (1962). Three fillies have won: Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980) and Winning Colors (1988).

More Derby History

CHURCHILL DOWNS

While traveling in England and France in 1872-1873, 26-year-old Col. M. Lewis Clark, devised the idea of a Louisville Jockey Club for conducting race meets. Clark toured and visited with a number of prominent racing leaders, including England's Admiral Rous and France's Vicompte Darn, vice president of the French Jockey Club.

Upon his return from Europe, Clark began development of his racetrack which would serve to showcase the Kentucky breeding industry. The track would eventually become known as "Churchill Downs." The first reference of the name Churchill Downs came in an 1883 Kentucky Derby article reported by the former Louisville Commercial.

More Than Just Waiting

Bible in a Year: 1 Kings 16–18; Luke 22:47–71

[Jesus] gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.” Acts 1:4

Police charged a woman with reckless driving after she drove off the street and onto the sidewalk and back because she didn’t want to wait for a school bus dropping off students!

While it’s true that waiting can make us impatient, there are also good things to do and learn in the waiting. Jesus knew this when He told His disciples to “not leave Jerusalem” (Acts 1:4). They were waiting to “be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (v. 5).

As they gathered in an upper room, likely in a state of excitement and anticipation, the disciples seemed to understand that when Jesus told them to wait, He didn’t say for them to do nothing. They spent time praying (v. 14); and informed by Scripture, they also chose a new disciple to replace Judas (v. 26). When they were joined together in worship and prayer, the Holy Spirit descended upon them (2:1–4).

The disciples hadn’t simply been waiting—they’d also been preparing. As we wait on God, it doesn’t mean doing nothing or impatiently rushing forward. Instead we can pray, worship, and enjoy fellowship as we anticipate what He’ll do. The waiting prepares our hearts, minds, and bodies for what’s to come.

Yes, when God asks us to wait, we can be excited—knowing that we can trust Him and the plans He has for us!

By Peter Chin

Today's Reflection

Do you find yourself in a season of waiting? How can you see this as a season of preparation instead?

It's a beautiful day for the race. Stew Can is the favorite today, Assault is in there, Dogbiscuit is three to one, Safety Pin has been scratched, and at 20:1, Beetle Bomb. Now the horses are approaching the starting gate, and there they go!

I,... pledge allegiance, to the blessed flag of the United States of America, and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands, one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.

The goodness that our nation incorporates into it's justice and legal codes, is not only for the blessing and goodness of our own nation, but extends far beyond our borders to help others around the world. The people of this world are so much better off because our Founders used a moral code heavily influenced by Judeo Christian ethics.

Many of the battles we fight, are not solely for us, but for mankind. I know that some folks don't like this, but who else stands up for other nations and people like we do. Will the U. N., China, or some other nation step up with as moral a code was we have tried to advance around the planet?

That pledge covers a lot more than most people realize.

We are that beacon on a hill, a president some thirty plus years ago spoke of. He was right.

Should we fail, our goodness on this planet will then be realized in it's full nature, and it will be sorely missed. Those of us who were angered because of our involvement around the planet, will finally begin to understand why it was necessary. Those who thought our nation was a pariah, will then find out what a pariah nation is really like.

Our nation will not last forever. One day this world will fall in on itself. Even now we have it pretty good.

People forget how bad things can get.

Refresher courses remain at bay, because of our Founders and the fact this Pledge is still recited with reverence by the majority of our Citizens.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

“LAST NIGHT WHEN WE WERE YOUNG”

This tune from 1935 was to be featured in the film “Metropolitan” but was cut at the last minute. Lyrics are by Yip Harburg.

This is an out-take from MGM’s “In the Good Old Summertime” from 1949 that was cut to reduce running time. As you can see, this song had bad luck when it came to the movies. The footage was rediscovered in 2004.
