California Law Would Outlaw Small Shampoo, Conditioner Bottles in Hotels
Reason ^ | April 23, 2019 | Billy Binion

The jury has rendered its verdict: plastic is polluting our oceans, and it's a problem. But it's one that won't be solved by straw bans or prohibitions on single-use plastics.

Yet California is poised to do just that with Assembly Bill 1162, which would require that hotels and miscellaneous vacation rentals phase out small plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion by January 1, 2023. Instead, they'll need to opt for refillable dispensers or containers that hold 12 or more ounces of product.

"We know we have an enormous problem with our world, we've become addicted to [plastic] and it's caused a major dilemma environmentally," Democratic Assemblymember Ash Kalra (District 27), who introduced the legislation, told ABC News.

He isn't wrong. A great deal of the plastic panic centers around the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—the infamous and mammoth collection of trash floating between Hawaii and California. Its discovery in 1997 and the years-long news coverage that followed prompted a worldwide frenzy to declutter the oceans. Measuring more than 1.6 million square kilometers (and growing), it is about three times the size of France, and more than twice the size of Texas.

But it isn't dominated by plastic straws, bags, or erstwhile shampoo bottles. The vast majority of the debris is composed of fishing-related accessories, like nets, ropes, and baskets. An estimated 20 percent came from the 2011 Japanese tsunami.

Should this come to pass I will carry my own on California trips and make sure to leave the trash behind for their landfills.

Idiocy disguised as SJW virtue-signalling in the CA legislature.

As if I needed another reason NOT to visit, now not bathing. It seems Cali is striving to become France of the New World.

Well, maybe..but it appears that they’re striving more to become the Venezuela of North America.

A lot a hotels/motels already do this...

Will this outlaw just the bottles or the sealed packets too?

Gross.

Being as it's liberals, perhaps they should save the planet by turning off the water and not taking showers, flushing or washing the bedding.

I could post hundreds of photos I have taken of the overwhelming filth, a very real ecological and environmental disaster caused by vagrants on a couple bicycle trails I ride here in Southern California. I could also post the nearly 50 emails I have sent the County of Los Angeles complaining, with the photos, and only after months of complaining will they respond. Even then, they only clean what I sent in the photos and leave everything around else around it. But I am the problem using straws, getting paper receipts, receiving shopping bags... They couldn’t care less about the trash, they are using the lawless to restrict my life with more laws.

The invention of the “Keurig” coffee system almost has me agreeing with them.

With these little plastic “pods” of coffee, coffee goes from an almost completely zero synthetic-waste beverage to a massive plastic-waste source. I have used metal filters for decades, so there is no waste but the grounds except for the small amount of packaging that a large amount of grounds came in.

Of course, it does get the Chinese into the coffee industry, which is, after all, the whole point.

Libs will never admit that it is their failed "recycle" campaign causing the plastic pollution.

They ship it to China where its dumped into the ocean.

Why not require plastic used for consumer packaging to be biodegradable? Some plastics — e.g., the plastic pipe installed in your house — we want to be durable. But a lot of plastics are used for disposable purposes and ideally would be recycled or biodegradable. There’s a shelf life issue for some products, but I’m willing to let the preppers figure out how to deal with their 20 year stock of biodegradable soft drink straws.

So they won’t allow the sale of toiletries that are legal for carry on baggage? (Limit 3.4 ounces per container). Or will they permit retail sales but just not giveaways?

Since we know hippies don’t bathe, it’s no surprise that the old hippies that are running California would be opposed to cleanliness.

Where does all the plastic discard garbage come from?

Here’s one possibility...
