It's nostalgia. Over time people see the past through rose colored glasses. The Russians of today see the Stalin years as a golden age where Russia became a superpower with a mighty military and the first space faring nation that was feared and respected across the world. Of course they forget the little details that the common folks reaped none of the benefits and were little more than slaves and millions died with millions more being forcible relocated.
As a Russian friend once told me, the Russians of today want the Soviet Union back...minus the Communism.
