Rush Limbaugh many years ago did a brilliant monologue about how we are such a good people that we ascribe human traits to our pets and animals. We want to believe so badly that they can understand what we say and that we can all get along. But at the end of the day, they are still animals and are going to do what they instinctively do. He was making an analogy.

They don't even recognize it as generosity. They think it's simply their own superiority being acknowledged and accommodated, as it deserves to be. Whenever we are kind to someone, they rarely think "Oh, how kind you are," they think, "Ah yes, once again the universe recognizes my value."
