GOP senator issues stark warning to Republicans on health care

GOP Sen. Mike Braun (Ind.) has a stark warning for Republicans: Come up with a viable alternative to ObamaCare or face another rout in the 2020 election.

Speaking with The Hill at his office in the Senate Russell Building, Braun described the GOP’s push to repeal ObamaCare without a plan of their own as one of the primary reasons for the Democratic wave election in 2018.

“What was it, about 55 House seats?,” Braun said. Republicans lost 40 seats in the 2018 midterm election and Democrats earned a majority in the House for the first time since 2011.

The freshman senator is worried that Republicans are in for a repeat performance in 2020.

“The whole repeal thing hurts our case about what we’re going to replace it with … [Democrats] have owned the issue pretty well because of the void we’ve created,” Braun said.

Republicans campaigned in 2016 on repealing and replacing ObamaCare. Voters gave Republicans control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, but GOP efforts to repeal the law were a legislative debacle and a political disaster.

“We weren’t prepared with a comprehensive alternative,” Braun said. “We’ve been apologists for the industry.”

Democrats earned a majority in the House for the first time since 2011.

Earned? That's a bit of a stretch.

My premiums have gone down (yes, down!) each year of the Trump admin so far. Yes, the system needs major reform, but nothing the left is suggesting (both Democrats and Republicans on the left) will make things better.

Braun is concern tolling. All the GOP has to do, as always, is be marginally better than the competition. The “fix” is not important, the “promise” (sham though it may be) has weight.

Leaving ObamaCare in place, raising Federal taxes on millions of middle class Americans, not addressing Second Amendment rights, and failing to arrest and indict the DC Swamp criminals didn’t help the GOP in the last midterms.

I have a wonderful viable alternative.

Get the hell out of our healthcare you gov’t jackasses. Let the free market take over (like it used to be).

That is a false, and dangerous narrative. The problem is government involvement. To say we need to replace government plan A With government plan B is ludicrous. We need to replace government plans and restrictions with the free market.

how about competitive marketing? Doctors should advertise their rates, maybe not like gas stations, but maybe like restaurants (menus). Allow clinics to sign people up for monthly dues that cover basic things. And, PLEASE, do something about prescription drugs: what a racket!

Neither side wants to offer options that actually empower the patients and doctors... only those that give more power to government hyper-bureaucrats to run our lives. It’s another symptom of the DeeCee disease that destroys Democrats minds and Republican spines. Obamacare was an electoral catastrophe for DemWits... that memory seems lost to the GOPe.

Make ALL charged medical expenses 100% tax deductible, over and above the standard deduction. To include doctor visits, health insurance premiums, health savings accounts, prescriptions, etc. But none of the DeeCee reptiles want any policy that empowers the citizen over the government!

To Socialize any service (healthcare in particular), you must first make that service un-affordable for the average person. Government policies have “insured” that! (pun intended!)

That would come with promotion of medical sharing associations and health savings accounts.

At one time local mutual insurance associations were a strong part of our economy. They were then bought out and consolidated.

Yup. This ridiculous scrum going on here between UPMC and Highmark which is forcing virtually everyone to find a new doctor is souring people's attitudes very quickly.
