I think this goes to a bigger issue, i.e. Mormonism does not base its beliefs on scripture. Any time someone in charge of the church has a "revelation" they can annul whatever problematic doctrine crops up. It's similar to Islam in that way. Elsie may have something to add here, and others.

Mormonism does not base its beliefs on scripture. Actually; they do.
Some from the KJV bible; hardly any from the Book of MORMON; an AWFUL lot from the Doctrines&Covenants and some really weird stuff from the Pearl of Great price.
All four of these writings can be found bound together in what is casually known as a QUAD. (Standard Works)
