Spoken like a Clemson fanboy. There is nothing wrong with USC or Columbia. Five Points needs to be better patrolled.

I grew up on the west coast at about the same time. Took the Pacific Electric car from Long Beach to Los Angeles many times alone with no worries. The P.E. made stops in Watts and other ‘bad’ neighborhoods. In many ways, a better time although I’m sure Eric Holder would disagree.

“You cannot do that today.”

Not in Newark or L.A. but you can in Japan. I saw 1st and 2nd graders riding the trains with no adults supervising to get to school in Tokyo.

It is true that it is not unheard of for Uber passengers, who are sauced (and that’s why they order an Uber), once a car arrives in the area with a sticker, (and whereas maybe in a more sober mode they might be observant and double check or maintain caution), alcohol impairs this judgment and they just pile right into the car of a complete stranger without even thinking of the consequences. It was 2 am after all for crying out loud. This had just the discretion of girls in tube tops in the 60s thumbing rides from strangers in California or Florida, all caution to the wind, end up in a shallow grave somewhere. I think that also had something to do with it. Scumbag just drives up, nice looking girl just opens his door, piles right in, he feels like a piece of ripe fruit has just fallen right into his hands. He is in control. He can do whatever he damn well pleases.

Your daughter learned a valuable lesson. It's called "situational awareness". Unfortunately for the murdered girl, she may have been impaired due to having had one too many drinks.

The monster who murdered her was probably cruising around the bars in his car, hoping to find a victim.

I was shocked at how many safety features have been added to deal with the fears of students

Our local college has installed police call boxes everywhere on campus with bright blue lights showing where they are. It seems like there is one every 100 years or so. But as soon as you step off campus there are no call boxes and no blue lights (It’s not a bad area at all)—and the girls (because that’s who the lights are for) are back in the real world.

I processed into the Army out of the Newark MEPS. Their hotel of choice for those staying overnight for processing, was the Royal Inn in East Orange. On our floor at night, were 3 or 4 MPs, I jokingly asked one if they were here to make sure no one AWOL. He told me that he wasn’t there to keep us in, he was there to keep the Section 8’ers out.

This is true. I have seen kids as young as six going to school on trains and busses by themselves in RUSH HOUR in downtown Tokyo. I have seen a small girl about seven given a 1,000 yen bill ($8) to go out to the local store on foot several blocks away and get some milk for mama, who is too busy. Happily talking to strangers on the way. Its weird but it is true for Japan. It will likely not be that way forever but it still is generally speaking.

All over Asia, in fact. I've seen trains and subways packed with unescorted school kids in Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and even many cities in China.

These nations, of course, do not tolerate the existence of a predator class because they feel racial guilt about enforcing their own laws.

Maybe she was set up. Sounds like too much of a coincidence. Maybe it was a trap. I would never trust Uber. Crimes happen from time to time. Need to not put yourself in a situation like that. It is a crime waiting to happen. Even taking a taxi can be creepy in certain situations. People need to be aware of the risks and only use those in emergencies or unusual circumstances. Not just so you can go out drinking. People are so naive.

One of my sons bands has played Japan several times. They all enjoyed their time there and can’t wait to go back.

I’m sure; East Orange is bad news - even less jobs than Newark. It is sad, because when you see some of the old homes there you realize it was once a wealthy suburb of a flourishing Newark. Now that money is out a few towns further west...

Has it been confirmed anywhere that this was not her intended Uber? This service has a history of and makes it too easy for unsavory people to take advantage of a vulnerable system, either as a passenger or driver.

Which case are you talking about? I’m assuming the SC one was a mistake and the MA one was the “correct” Uber.

A first, the police officer was apparently annoyed with being called and interrogated by daughter roughly, as though he thought she was lying. I complained to the Chief and a detective was assigned who was much more professional.

We have the perp's photo from Target's cameras but as yet no one has been arrested.

I have learned to keep children within easy reach and to always carry a pistol: I can't run fast, so the bullet will have to do the work.
