What makes me curious about this entire scenario is, why did The DonaldTM hire this guy in the first place? Did Cohen come recommended from someone Trump trusted?

Michael Cohen graduated from one of the worst law schools in the U.S. -- the Thomas Cooley Law School in Michigan. It's constantly in the news because they're always under threat to lose their accreditation.

Cohen wasn't hired for his legal skills. He was hired for a role that is actually pretty common in real estate circles -- to make deals behind the scenes for his client, while using attorney-client privilege to shield his client from scrutiny even for totally legitimate matters. The legal profession is filled with sh!tty, borderline criminal actors like this. In a place like New York City it's the only way to get anything done.

Donald probably hired him because he was an @$$#0£€. Attorneys are not usually retained by Billion dollar business because the are nice. Unfortunately when you hire an @$$#0£€, you run the risk that he is going to turn on you if things go south for him.
