Full headline: Winning: U.S., Chinese trade negotiators will speed up talks as Beijing agrees to buy $1.2 trillion worth of American goods
Trade talks between U.S. and Chinese negotiators were extended for two days on Friday as both sides agreed to speed up talks in a bid to finalized an agreement ahead of a March 1 deadline when Washington planned to impose higher tariffs on some $200 billion worth of imported goods from China.
Chinese Vice-Premier Liu He said Beijing and Washington would redouble efforts and speed up negotiations on trade, as talks aiming to end a tariff war between the two biggest economies will continue for at least another 48 hours.
As President Xi Jinpings special envoy, Liu is leading Chinas latest trade negotiations in Washington, the South China Morning Post reported. He said both sides had made positive progress over the previous two days in a number of areas including the ongoing trade imbalance, agriculture, forced technology transfers, intellectual property protection, and financial services. He added that a deal is very likely.

I’d Buy That For a Dollar

“Buying more goods” means almost nothing.
The trade imbalance is only a very small part of the problem.
It’s the cheating and stealing, the malevolent use of trade and finance.
Tough one for Trump.
Yes, unfair tariffs and theft of IP are the main things.
Xis instructions: PROMISE them anything for the future.
And we know what their promises are adeof.
I am EXTREMELY sceptical.
We have been getting ripped off by China, for the entire last generation and a half.
Everybody sold us out. Both parties.
Trump this is why you won.
This is CRITICAL.
Don’t just make a deal. FIX this.
Typical Chinese tactic of stalling for time. 5 years will go by and then we will find out chinese bought zilch.
Actually we just set the all-time, ever, with any country, by any country, in all of recorded human history, largest trade deficit with China.
In all history. In the year that just ended.
See for yourself:

Yeah, I can’t see how Trump can do anything constructive now.
He’s got a few more months before China can interfere in elections, I hope he makes the best of it. He doesn’t have to act now. Even a lot of Dems and RINOs are behind him now on this.
Buying more goods - really sums up the opposite side. A communist, top down economy that gets turned on and off depending on political whim
Really? Do you believe that POTUS Trump will let the Chinese stall for five years?
The president and his trade/natl. security team are well aware of how the Chinese operate. Have a little faith in him. At least he’s working on making the situation better for us; what did Obama and Bush do?
Obama and Bush supported the profits their donors were making in China.
They let the problem get worse.
Trump is not obligated to those donors- but most of his ‘allies’ in Congress are.
Just can’t see anything good happening this quick.
The trade imbalance and the currency manipulation are low-lying fruit, but don’t reach the heart of the problem.
Perhaps strong enforcement of our laws will keep China in line, but I’d like to see new tariffs too.
Another slick ploy by the Chinese, and Trump’s team will fall for it. We need immediate or short term results on a variety of other serious issues. $1.2T sound huge. It isn’t, in the scope of all else that’s at stake.
POTUS does not micro-manage every private business transaction between a Chinese buyer and US seller. POTUS gets data from Dept of Commerce at end of fiscal year.
Let us say at end of 1st year the trade does not look good.
POTUS can not cancel all trade agreements immediately and begin new negotiations. Most likely he will wait to review results for a couple of years. By that time his 1st term is history.
Assuming he gets re-elated, he could cancel the trade agreement and impose more tariffs or offer to begin new meetings with Chinese trade reps. The Chinese are world famous for deception and obfuscation. I can easily see them stalling until Trump is out of office.
Once Trump is gone, there is not one living soul in USA who will be tough on foreign trade. Starting with Reagan (who encouraged expanding trade with China), the Bushes, Clinton, Obama, every one of them did absolutely nothing to put a kabash on ugly trade deficits.

I am pleased to report that the U.S. has made substantial progress in our trade talks with China on important structural issues including intellectual property protection, technology transfer, agriculture, services, currency, and many other issues. As a result of these very......
.
....productive talks, I will be delaying the U.S. increase in tariffs now scheduled for March 1. Assuming both sides make additional progress, we will be planning a Summit for President Xi and myself, at Mar-a-Lago, to conclude an agreement. A very good weekend for U.S. & China!
Whoops, meant to add I don’t nkow what to think.
Can’t believe China has acceded on IP theft and technology transfers.
I am waiting to see.
The guy leading our negotiations this time, actually seems to get it. The first American I have thought that about.
The first one.
That said, every politician in both political parties, for the entire last generation and a half, have all been completely sold out.
So I could see, us being sold out once yet, again.
Sure.
But maybe, maybe. Just maybe. This time is different.
Maybe. We will see.
I think if Trump just sells us out again, it will cost him the next election.
I don’t think he will. He really seemed to completely get it. For real.
We will see.
Yeah Lightizer is an impressive guy.
Lot of RINOs om the other side thoufgh.
