Sadly much of FR has been overrun with Putinists. So they are not sympathetic to the truth in any form. Thought this would change when Trump ascended to power. But it hasn’t.
Putin is smart, but he is no friend of freedom.
He is never to be trusted about anything, except to act in his and Russia’s own interest. He has chosen some horrible countries and people to associate with.

Note: I don’t think Russia chose to engage the US in battle.
I think the Wagner group acted at the direction of Iranian forces (probably Quds) or possibly (unlikely) by direction of Assad. Every case I’ve seen where US actually hit Syrian military forces, it was at the direction of Iranian elements.
Neither Putin or Trump want to have a direct conflict. But our military will retaliate if fired upon. No questions asked.
