Vitamin D Supplements Aren’t Living Up To Their Hype

Recent studies say taking extra amount is of the nutrient may not be a boon for every body

Magazine issue: Vol. 195, No. 2, February 2, 2019, p. 16

In the supplement world, vitamin D is a bit like a Kardashian. Its fame seemed to come out of nowhere about a decade ago, garnering so much press so fast that it’s hard to remember a time when people weren’t talking about it.

Vitamin D had long been known for protecting bones, but its star began to rise in the early 2000s after researchers made connections hinting that vitamin D was good for a lot more than our skeletons. It appeared to help protect against a lengthy list of ailments, including multiple sclerosis, asthma, depression, heart disease and cancer. The vitamin also was said to improve athletic performance.

Organizations like the Vitamin D Council — the 2003 brainchild of a psychiatrist who became a vitamin D enthusiast — began to actively promote the benefits to the public and to physicians, while selling test kits for vitamin D blood levels. Doctors checked for it; patients demanded testing. Researchers latched on.

But with more research comes more scrutiny, and most recently, a series of seemingly tarnishing findings. On November 10, the New England Journal of Medicine published the largest study so far to test vitamin D supplements’ protection against cancer and heart disease. The results were generally interpreted as inconclusive at best and disappointing at worst. One 2017 review of the evidence for cardiovascular benefits concluded that studies of people taking vitamin D “have failed to show clear improvements in blood pressure, insulin sensitivity or lipid parameters.”

Even the vitamin’s reputation for helping bones took a hit last April from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

"Just read a report that if men live long enough, we all will get prostrate cancer."

That's pretty much what I've been reading too.

Albeit, doctors are always saying the men with prostate cancer will likely die of something else before they die of prostate cancer. (when I told my friend that, he laughed and said that that's exactly what his doctor said)

My PSA reading have always been low and at a constant level.(Change is what draws the doctors attention)

That committee was firm as a result of Obamacare.

It’s nomsense. Their main conclusion is that men don’t want the stress of a high PSA and biopsies. You can bey your ads the men in that committee have theirs checked in a regular basis.

Glucosamine Condroitinsure works for me. If I neglect taking it for a few day, my knees feel it.

thanks.

all three of those organizations predate Obamacare. USPSTF is funded by the Feds.
none of them agreed with each other re: PSA testing guidelines.
USPSTF revised their none-guidelines last year to be more in line with AUA.

My physical is in May. I’ll keep asking the VA to include it. I will be at the end of the guideline age.

Should be interesting.

Fact: most of us are deficient in vitamin d3. Get a blood test and find out. For optimal health your levels in your blood need to be over 50. Over 70 if you are fighting anything chronic or are in poor health.

I was deficient in sunny socal when I got the H1N1 flu virus as a fairly young mom of 3 kids. By day 3 I had pneumonia in both lungs and by day 4 I was having problems exhaling and inhaling, after never having had any lung problems in my life. IV antibiotics saved me.

I learned about vitamin d3 then and started supplementing, going back and forth for blood tests every couple months to titrate the dose and get it therapeutic. I’ve never gotten the flu again and I don’t get bad cases of anything. I take 5000 IU every day unless I was half naked in the sun for a few hours. I take a full vitamin K supplement with it.

You might still get any number of sicknesses while supplementing vitamin d to a good level. BUT YOU WILL NEVER GET THE WORST CASES.

Being deficient in vitamin D is the easiest way to get the worst cases of any illness, from a cold to cancer.

Agreed. We are all also deficient in magnesium. Take it at bedtime and you will sleep very well. Bathe in it (flakes or even the much cheaper Epsom salts) too.

I woke up with a backache today and realized I’d slacked off on my serrapeptase. That stuff gets rid of scar tissue and other stuff in joints that causes pain. It’s amazing. I’m going to take one right now. Yay silkworms!

“my resting heart rate dropped noticeably”

Well, I can’t claim that. Fish oil and Omega 3-6-9 no effect on mine.

The “balanced diet” approach with a grotesque food pyramid putting the most important foods in the “eat sparingly” top part and the most destructive foods at the “eat often” bottom is medical malpractice on a colossal scale.

Isn’t it though?

We need to respect western medicine for the pharma drugs that do work, and for the biomechanical genius in orthopedic knowledge, definitely some credit in surgeries, scans, and other treatments. But pure natural health, including nutrition?? Not their department, don’t seek their help for it.

Yes, magnesium oxide is really just a laxative. Citrate is excellent but I j\use the glycinate. Capsules only so they get in there.

I would get a headache and my wife would have a headache.
My back would hurt and my wife's back would hurt.

I couldn't have anything by myself.

I told her “I can't wait to get prostrate cancer”.

Even though I was joking, I take it back. I don't wish that on anybody.

What started me on this path was, my range numbers were pretty consistent and low.

A friend of mind was recalling that he had the same types of readings, then all of a sudden they accelerated...his numbers were still within “acceptable” guidelines, he was concerned with the rapid increase in numbers. Sure enough, he had prostrate cancer.

Mine didn't increase as quick has his but it did all of a sudden accelerate.
So I chased everything down I could regarding this.
Not one Dr. in or out of VA seems to be concerned.
I started taking Finasteride and my last test (2016) showed under 2.0, back where they used to be.

My friend's situation is always in the back of my mind. How do i alleviate the concern without having the PSA test ? If the V.A. wont do it, I'll have it done elsewhere.

Maybe keep a water bottle and a jar of serrapeptase on your night table to take it first thing in the a.m. before you start your day??
