Many commenters at the site are claiming this is a "cover story" for murder.

But that makes no sense at all.

If they were coming up with a cover story, why one where one of them goes to prison and the other has his career ruined?

Shows real stupidity.

Over 40 years ago, In a University department I was associated with, a young police officer was said to have pointed his .45 at the head of another officer, in a joke.

There was a witness as well as the victim.

The foolish officer then said: "I guess I should have checked it first."

Then he checked it and found it was loaded.

Then he was fired.

My point is that police are capable of doing stupid things with guns.

Reminds me of a story I heard about an actor in the 80's, who was fooling around with a .44 magnum revolver loaded with blanks. He put it to his temple and pulled the trigger. What he didn't realize was that the wadding alone for a blank in a gun that size is sufficient to kill you.

As a buddy of mine said after - it was a stupid mistake and he'll never do it again.
