As shutdown drags on, federal workers flock to food pantries
CBS "News" ^ | January 15, 2019 | By Megan Cerullo (D-CBS)

Federal workers -- who haven't seen paychecks since before the government closed on Dec. 22 -- are lining up at food pantries across the U.S.

The Capital Area Food Bank, which operates in the Washington, D.C. area, hosted five pop-up food pantry locations after federal workers -- who missed their paychecks for the first time last Friday -- flooded the organization's "Hunger Lifeline" with calls for help, according to President and CEO Radha Muthiah.

Hotline representatives direct callers to the food pantries closest to their homes, and help make them aware of supplementary nutrition alternatives.

"We have seen an uptick in the number of calls from individuals who weren't traditionally clients to better understand the emergency food assistance network in our area should the shutdown persist," Muthiah told CBS. "Typically, SNAP [food stamps] recipients are the ones that come to food pantries but what we did this weekend was targeted to federal workers and contractors who typically earn more income but had missed paychecks," she said.

Workers were grateful for the extra assistance but fearful that it might not last as long as they need it to, she said. "The most common question we heard was, 'Can we count on you to be here next weekend?'"

Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, says this food bind is illustrative of "how many Americans are only one missed paycheck away from hunger."

He said the shutdown could become an "epic calamity" for hungry Americans should it last even another week.

"For most people pantries are a last resort. This is something that never should happen in a rational, reasonable world," he said. "But as long as this is happening we will make sure federal employees and contractors who are serving us don't go hungry."

Goes to show how stupid government”workers” are. Can’t go one whole week without a paycheck or they’ll starve to death.

The average pay of a federal worker— in DC is what? Way close to six figures. If these people haven’t both stocked up food for emergencies in the first place AND saved up an emergency savings fund-— then that is tough crap. We in the private sector have had to do that for literally years.... especially the last EIGHT years under a marxist obamauamo. Screw em.

Food lines. Do they have Brie there? What crap CBS.

Average federal salary is over $84,000. The poor federal worker narrative is insulting.

Put them out of their misery and fired most of them. Let the states or private sectors absorb any necessary jobs.

78% of everyone is living paycheck to paycheck. Probably not phony, but definitely designed to cast the President in a negative light.

No mention that the D’s were for a border wall before they were against it.

Furloughed Federal Employees Are Still Paid More Than You
Civilian federal workers make 17 percent more than similar workers in the private sector, according to a 2017-2018 report by the Congressional Budget Office.

Fourth day after their first missed paycheck and they’re starving? Sure, I believe that. I believe in the Tooth Fairy, too. Who Trump is about to RIF.

For eight years under Obama, a suffering American public, out of jobs, out of money and out of sight was ignored by the media and the Obama White House.

Do not expect the vast majority who lost so much during those years to sympathize with government workers who have not been laid off nor have they lost their jobs.

The propaganda is so thick at this point, it is best to ignore it.

I LOVE this kind of stuff! When I had three adults and three TEEN BOYS to feed, it was my job, no, my CHALLENGE, to bring us in under budget on the groceries each week.

I also learned a LOT from my MIL who had a family of 14 to feed on ONE income.

Here is a list of groceries that can be purchased for approximately $10.

Granted, things are a little more pricy in some areas, but just find the CHEAPEST grocery store around, or shop in an ethnic store. Buy STORE BRANDS, nothing Name Brand.

$10 Grocery List:

1. Baking Powder (MYO!)
2. Eggs
3. Flour
4. Fruits (on sale)
5. Hamburger
6. Rice or Ramen Noodles
7. Margarine
8. Milk
9. Potatoes
10. Salt
11. Vegetables (on sale)
12. Tuna (1 or 2 cans)

What’s For Breakfast?

* Scrambled eggs in a Biscuit
* Fruit Smoothie, Hash Browns
* Muffins, many kinds...
* Pancakes, Fruit
* Potato Pancakes
* Tortilla with scrambled or fried eggs inside
* Donut Muffins
* Rice Pudding

What’s For Lunch/Dinner?

* Tortilla with anything you have on hand in it.
* Tomatoes/onions/hamburg etc.
* Shepherds Pie (Hamburger/gravy over mashed potatoes/corn)
* Veggies in gravy over rice
* Baked Potato and Vegetables
* Scalloped Potatoes and Vegetables
* Oven Baked French Fries & Salad
* Vegetable Soup w/ or w/o Rice
* Tuna/ Pea Wiggle (serve over toast or biscuits or saltine crackers)
* Scalloped Potato/Tuna Casserole
* Popovers fill with: tuna pea wiggle recipe or gravy/veggie mix
* Chicken Pot Pie
* Pizza Pasta

Although the above menu is very limited, this grocery list is for extremely tough times and is meant to help you get through the week, not to base your diet on for any length of time!

Too many people either live paycheck to paycheck or are portrayed as having to do that.

So it appears to me that federal paper pushers are as fiscally irresponsible as the government itself. One paycheck away from the food bank? I’m supposed to feel sorry about this?
