On What Grounds Can the FBI Investigate the President as a Counterintelligence Threat?
Lawfare ^ | January 13, 2019 | Jack Goldsmith

The New York Times reported on Jan. 11 that the FBI “began investigating whether President Trump had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests” soon after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017. In other words, the FBI opened a counterintelligence investigation on the president. *** If indeed the FBI took the unprecedented step of opening a counterintelligence investigation directed at the president premised on his threat to national security, I hope the bureau had much stronger evidence for doing so than the Times story provided—and I hope that something of investigative substance actually turned on it. Otherwise, the step strikes me as deeply imprudent.

When we were going to get all (or some) key documents declassified and then pulled back... that was it for me.

Judge Pirro asked the President about that the other day. He said he’ll release the FISA warrants if he “needs to,” so obviously there’s something in there that the RATS wouldn’t want known. I don’t like that President Trump is playing games with them like this - that information belongs to the American people, not to him to use as a bargaining chip with the enemy.

I'll post again: Barr's appointment was striking a deal. To me, it's the only thing that fits. He's holding his ammo waiting for Mueller.

Without taking a single scalp (sans some firings and resignations), I think this is a bad idea. Once Mueller announces some phony Trump accountability, the general public will never hear a damn countering response over the leftest media's sturm an drang.

IMO, the FBI has no authority to investigate an elected president. Whatever the president does in the foreign field is completely covered by his Article II powers. They are NOT the arbitrator of what is or what is not within that scope. They are not the fourth branch of government.

At the very end of the article he says, in effect, that all this “imprudence” or worse will have been justified if the FBI really comes up with the goods on the President. All his prior palavering about Constitutional niceties add up to nothing if they can prove Trump really was a threat to national security.

Well, at least I can think of one good thing about W, then.

He also kept Gore and Kerry out of the White House.

Bush selected Roberts and Alito for the Supreme Court. Even though Roberts has repeatedly been a disappointment, anyone Kerry would have selected would have been far worse than Roberts, and Alito was a very good choice.

They would need to be reporting to someone...WHO?

Clearly they don't report to their boss.
