California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is reportedly planning to propose a significant expansion to his state's paid parental leave program, making it the longest in the country.
The newly sworn-in governor reportedly plans to propose a policy that would give parents six months of partially paid leave to care for a newborn or newly adopted baby, according to The Associated Press.
"It's a developmental necessity," Newsom said in reference to paid leave at a press conference unveiling his proposed $144 billion general fund budget for the state on Thursday, HuffPost also reported. "We're committed to this."
Newsom reportedly eventually wants to provide parents in his state with six months of parental leave that could also be divided between them, though the AP notes that his initial budget only includes a "smaller step in that direction."

Did you guys read the article yesterday about Caucasian Americans not having enough children? Early alzheimers (jk) (I hope) prevents me from remembering the terminology used but something like the population is not going to be sustained. IN OTHER WORDS we are not reproducing enough to replace ourselves and if it keeps up we will become a dying breed here. Anyways, now I speak of all races of course but it’s a GOOD thing to give incentive for people to have children and yes, a parent should be main caregiver at least the first year of it’s life. Though with the added expense of a baby getting only partial income might not be enough but perhaps the other parent could take on extra work. Unless one comes from money, wins money, or gets at least a Ba in college and secure a good job there is no hope of comfortably raising a family in this country that’s a fact. MANY young couples are putting off families or having more because they can’t afford to take the time off work/daycare if they don’t.
