We’ve always had this option. We’ve just never exercised it. Under Trump, now we have. Which of our allies is going to arrest Americans on China’s behalf? And which of China’s allies is going to arrest Americans to satisfy Beijing? Not any country that doesn’t want Uncle Sam cutting it off from the world economy. This is what hard power looks like. It’s not just China that’s capable of doing it (via its threat to punish airlines over websites re Taiwan).
