We’re living in an age of unprecedented technology. It’s not the future that our elders promised to us when we were kids – I mean, where are the flying cars? – but technology has made our lives exponentially easier.

Take the smartphone for example. What used to take a computer, a Walkman, an atlas, and more now fits in the palm of your hand. In fact, the advent of the smartphone has rendered obsolete some things that we used for years.

Here’s a list of ten things that our smartphones have replaced. It’s not an exhaustive list by any means, but I think you’ll get an idea of what revolutionary technology our phones have become. Enjoy!

10. Landlines and payphones

9. Flashlights

8. Calculators

Are you saying RPN is without equal?

Yes, it really stacks up against the competition.

Oh yes, It's a sweetheart deal alright.

Worse part is teachers don't know to use them.

For years I tried to teach math teachers to use them to teach Algebra to no avail.

You would be amazed at how uneducated most teachers are.

Yeah, I know. That’s why I hope mine lives forever. Almost 34 years so far, so it might.

9. Flashlights

I can remember for years the conventional wisdom that a flashlight was an essential item to have handy for safety purposes. Nowadays, it seems crazy to have an extra flashlight nearby when your smartphone can light the way for you.
Or your Wizard's wand...

Mine is grungy, worn, has paint damage from an errant blob of solder, and the little 15C badge is gone, but it still works fine. It was a Christmas present from my dad years ago.

What battery do you mean?

The backup battery for the FIOS system. Should give at least 8 hours of service with the electricity out. It's a sealed wet cell battery. Replacement batteries run roughly $20-$50, and as I noted, they need to be replaced every 5 years or so. (They start beeping, you can re-set them a few time to cut off the beeper). https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/battery-backup

That’s exactly the sort of thing that the Free Market exists to deal with.

I bought mine when Regan was nearing the end of his first term. My real estate career started in residential sales in 1979 and I am still active on the appraisal side. My 12C is really beat up but still works perfectly. I replaced the battery once when G.W. Bush was president. After the towers fell.

Agenda 21 is not a Free Market principle. Government subsidized trains and programs are not Free Market but closer to communism. High speed trains and “renewable energy” can not break even let alone make a profit.

OK, yes, I am aware of that. As I stated, we still haven’t installed it because it’s quite inconvenient to our house layout and furniture situation.

You’re right, it probably works for most failures. But, several times even with our underground system, major ice/blizzards and hurricane weather has knocked out power for days. But not enough for me to really worry about it.

A appreciate all my phone can do, and rely on it a great deal.

Still, there is something to be said for having the skills to be able to use the old analog versions of the things replaced. It's possible we may never be in a position to use those old-style devices, but you never know.

And one of the funniest things was watching my teen-age daughter trying to figure out how to use a rotary phone that she saw in a telephone museum.
