‘Hip Hop Nutcracker’ reinvents tradition at Oakland’s Paramount Theatre
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | November 6, 2018 | Claudia Bauer

Once upon time, when Mike Fitelson was growing up in Oakland’s Montclair neighborhood, he saw “The Nutcracker.” He was bored out of his mind — except for the always exciting, high-jumping Russian dance. Over time, his ennui became the seed of a really cool idea: a new version that would be fun and engaging in a completely different way.

Yuck. No thanks. Not even one minute of it.
Same as with Hamilton.
Everyone Ooing and Ahhing over some historically questionable Mumbo-Jumbo.

If it’s typical hip hop there’s plenty of simulated sex.

#1: "Cultural appropriation!"

What does "The Nutcracker" have to do with African culture? I'm often told about the rich cultural heritage of Africa and yet all I ever see offered is a pastiche of European culture remixed with Negro music, "Hamilton" for example.

It seems to me the reality is that African culture is not quite so rich as we are told. In fact, I don't know that I've ever seen any African culture except in Br'er Rabbit stories, which are based on African "trickster" folk tales. I'm suppose there must be more, but it is never presented.

The Left really does destroy everything that is beautiful, don’t they?

Can’t wait for the hip-hop version of Phantom of the Opera.

I am just amazed that this jerk actually saw the original, even if he was bored out of his mind.

I have nothing against live theater, when done well.
I just have no use for Rap. Most of it sounds like
a drunkened Baby complaining about problems they go out of their way to cause for themselves. A litany of complaining or gib-me-dat behavior, heavily leavened with profanities.

Could be worse— wait until they bring out the gay adaptation of The Nutcracker: THE BUTTCRACKER! That would definitely be sh*ttier!

I'm looking forward to a hip hop version of Oedipus Rex. Most uses of MF ever on stage.

This used to be called social climbing but it’s
just a simulacrum of white culture.

“Whiteface” like gay marriage is the new 21st c. Minstrel show
