Russia’s Security Agency Hit by Terrorist Attack

Explosion kills the teenager who carried it into the FSB’s regional headquarters

MOSCOW—A bomb exploded Wednesday at a regional headquarters of Russia’s Federal Security Service, killing the teenager who carried it into the building and injuring three security officers in a rare terrorist attack on the country’s most powerful security agency.

Authorities said a 17-year-old male local resident carried the bomb into the lobby of the FSB building, located in the northern province of Arkhangelsk. The device exploded after he took it out of a bag, Russia’s antiterrorism committee said in a statement.

Investigators opened a probe into terrorism and illegal possession of ammunition, conducting searches at the suspect’s home and checking his family and social circle, authorities said.

According to Russian media reports, the suspect posted a warning on an online anarchist messaging board a few minutes before the blast. Describing himself as a communist and an anarchist, he wrote that he had decided to act because the FSB fabricated cases and tortured people. “Most likely, I’ll die because of the explosion,” the message said, according to the reports.

The message hasn’t been confirmed by authorities, but they said they are checking whether he belonged to “prohibited organizations.”

The incident comes two weeks after authorities said an 18-year-old student detonated explosives and opened fire at a college in Crimea, killing 21 people and injuring dozens before taking his own life. Authorities classified that attack as mass murder rather than terrorism.

While terrorist attacks aren’t unheard of in Russia, which has grappled with separatist violence after the fall of the Soviet Union and a spate of Islamic State-inspired attacks in recent years, an attack on an FSB headquarters is rare outside of the predominantly Muslim North Caucasus region.

We know this mad bomber’s age (18), and we know his is a student. Do we know anything else, perhaps something he has in common with other mad bombers? Or are even Russian investigators clueless on motive?

I will apparently never understand why Russia doesn’t fully embrace Western Civ and get on with cleansing Islam within its borders and embrace an open, civil society .

This is the photo...and FYI: suicide bombings were encouraged and inspired by KGB trainings of MidEast jihadists throughout the Cold War. (Even the likes of Yasser Arafat spent extensive time in Moscow.) And to this day there are videos of Russian kids in the provinces and Crimea being taught how to make explosives including suicide belts. The country under Putin has an erratic economy and a toxic militarized culture. Not a good combo.

Hi Buckeye,

This FSB headquarters, as the article states, is located far from Chechnya and the perpetrator is a minor. I follow Russia quite closely and at the moment there is actually more ‘calm’ in Chechnya (not to be confused with Ingushetia, which is tense) than in most of mainland Russia.

Putin’s crony, Ramzan Kadyrov is head of Chechnya. Kadyrov rides high in Kremlin aid and kickbacks in exchange for ‘submission’ - so actually: the region is doing better than most of provincial Russia! I believe there is a healthier birthrate for example in Chechnya than among native Russians, who are in the midst of a major demographic crisis.

Russia (sadly comparable to the U.S. in this regard which is catching up) has a strong undercurrent of youth violence and suicide especially among males. The life of expectancy of men at large in the country is lower than North Korea to give you an idea...

There was a school shooting over a week ago in Kerch, Crimea where 21 people including the young shooter were shot dead. But even before that there has been quite a few stabbings, axe-ings throughout Russian schools leading up to that...

Russian culture has many problems, to be sure, but Russians are right to be fearful of Western “Civilization” in its current state.

Rampant, shameless homosexual propaganda, even in Elementary schools, the malignant cancer called “Hollywood”, racial violence, continual erosion of Freedom of Speech and the importation of Sharia Law. Sadly, those terms describe modern Western Civilization. One cannot blame Russians for rejecting those “values”.

These days, when I think of civilized countries, Hungary and Poland come to mind. Russia would be much better off emulating the values of those nations than the decadent, dying West.

Not that reporters know this fact, but attacking a military or intelligence target by any means... is not “terrorism.”

I know, I know, right?!

Proper word usage is so out of vogue.

Anyway, FReepers should know that “terrorism” is only against civilian targets.

Until the Communists took power Russia was a tiny minority with more or less modern ideas attached to a feudal economy and backward culture.

It produced a Tchaikovsky but 99.999 of the population never heard of him.

I can’t think of an autocrat more autocratic than the Russian autocracy. while we were hammering out a basis for our Republic, Russia and Russians were basically the property of one man. There was no concept of Freedom.
